MCKNIGHT SETS PACE IN MID-AMATEUR

Tom McKnight of Galax is the leader after two rounds of the State Mid-Amateur Championship at the Augustine Golf Club in Stafford.

The 6,700-yard layout has yielded only two sub-par scores in two days, one a 70 by Jake Allison of Roanoke on Saturday. McKnight has posted back-to-back par-71s and holds a three-stroke lead over Allison and Pat Tallent.

Keith Decker of Fieldale shot 73-75-148 and is six shots back. J.W. Entsminger of Lexington is 10 shots back.

In other golf news in the region:

Virginia Tech is tied for seventh after 36 holes of the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville.

The Hokies' top five golfers combined for a 585 to tie Florida State. North Carolina leads the tournament with a score of 568. Robby Rasmussen led the Hokies with a 68-77-145 and Kennedy Cliffe was a close second for the Hokies with 75-71-146. Play concludes with 18 holes today.

Andy Braddock earned medalist honors to lead Liberty University to the team title at the 16th Annual Washington and Lee Fall Golf Classic.

Braddock carded a 36-hole total of 146 on the Lexington Country Club Course. Bluefield College finished second, nine stroke back. Ferrum finished fifth at 634, Roanoke (648) was eighth and VMI (693) 14th.

SOCCER Parker leads W&L to 5-1 win

Freshman midfielder Jamie Parker scored four goals to lead Washington and Lee past Lynchburg 5-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's matchup in Lexington.

The Hornets (2-3-1 overall, 1-1 conference) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Teepe early in the first half. Parker then scored to tie the score and that's the way the half would end.

The Generals (3-0, 1-0) erupted for four second-half goals. Colin Connolly scored the game winner 2:44 seconds into the half before Parker finished his scoring with three goals in a 15-minute span.

Maryville defeated Roanoke College 3-1 in men's soccer at Alumni Field in Salem.

Todd Hallauer scored the lone goal for the Maroons (1-2-2) at 1:27 of the second half on assists from Andy Newton (Cave Spring High School) and Todd Lyons (Blacksburg). Maryville took a 2-1 lead 20 minutes later and added an insurance goal with five minutes remaining in the game.

Ferrum got goals from five players in a 5-2 men's victory over Bridgewater in Bridgewater.

Brothers Mike and David Carey had a goal and an assist each in the victory for the Panthers (2-2). Tim Traywick, Kevin Chenorsky and Jonathan Seale also added goals.

VMI surrendered a goal to Davidson's Robert Clarke with 28 seconds remaining in the game to drop a 2-1 decision in a Southern Conference game in Davidson, N.C. The Wildcats (6-3-0, 2-1-0) outshot the Keydets 21-9. Phillip Harper scored the lone goal for VMI (3-5-0, 0-1-0).

Katlyn Krist, Erin Archer and Alison Wood scored two goals each as Randolph-Macon Woman's College routed Hollins 9-3 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer game in Lynchburg.

Weesie Glendenning had a goal and an assist for Hollins (2-2, 0-2). Randolph-Macon Woman's is 4-1, 2-1.

Radford dropped a 2-0 decision to Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference women's game in Charleston, S.C. Laurie Smith and Mary Pipilas each scored a goal for the Buccaneers (6-0, 1-0). Radford is 0-5, 0-3.

Karin Treese scored the lone goal of the game on a corner kick to lead Washington and Lee past Maryville 1-0 in a non-conference women's game in Lexington.

Roanoke pitches shutout in field hockey

Roanoke College defeated host Catawba 2-0 in a field hockey game in Salisbury, N.C. Ali Oglesby had a goal and an assist for the Maroons and teammate Elizabeth Hammond scored the winning goal.

Radford's men placed sixth among 12 teams at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. Freshman Justin Mosby (Christiansburg) made an impressive showing, placing in the top 10 with a time of 26 minutes, 23 seconds.
