IN SERVICE NORTH

MARINE LANCE CPL. JOSEPH L. BROOKS, son of Doris Linkenhoker of Vinton, recently completed a 21/2-month overseas operation with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force, which provided security for American citizens and the American embassies in Liberia and the Central African Republic.

Brooks, a 1995 graduate of William Byrd High School, is stationed in Morehead City, N.C.

MARINE LANCE CPL. ANDREW T. MINTON, son of Ronald and Jennie Minton of Roanoke, recently received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service.

Minton, a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

ARMY PVT. DEAN C. BURKE, son of Charles and Pamela Burke of Salem, recently graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

NAVY AIRMAN JOSHUA Z. ESTRADA, son of David Estrada of Roanoke, recently participated in a military training exercise in Thailand aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa. The USS Tarawa is stationed in the Middle East where it transports the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

NAVY MIDSHIPMAN MICHAEL S. MCFADDEN, son of Michael and Joyce McFadden of Blue Ridge, was recently recognized for superior performance while serving with the Navy ROTC unit at Virginia Military Institute.

McFadden is a 1992 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School.

DR. MATTHEW E. NEWTON, son of John P. and Virginia A. Newton of Roanoke, recently was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.

Newton is a 1983 graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School. He is also a graduate of Virginia Tech and Ohio State University.

Newton is currently assigned to Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach.

AIR FORCE CAPT. RAYMOND W. MARSH, son of Raymond W. and Helen R. Marsh of Salem, recently received the Air Force Commendation Medal, his third award.

Marsh is a 1984 graduate of Salem High School and a 1988 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He is currently a construction chief at Osan Air Base, Songton, South Korea.

MARINE SGT. TREVOR S. DEMPSEY, son of Richard and Norma Dempsey of Roanoke, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in recognition of his superior performance while serving at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan.

Dempsey is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.
