Forty-four business people from Roanoke and Salem went to "jail" for one hour at the Holiday Inn-Salem on Oct. 3 to raise $15,879 for local families that are members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The top fund-raisers were Marie White, $1,315; Everett Kier, $1,165; and Bill Street, $807. Sponsors of the event included the Holiday Inn-Salem, GTE Mobilnet, Macado's and Security Patrol.

The Roanoke College chapter of Habitat for Humanity has received a grant from the Allstate Foundation to fund the chapter's second house. The $9,000 grant is a matching grant, and the Roanoke College chapter has begun a drive to raise the additional $9,000 to finish the three-bedroom house on Virginia Avenue, which the chapter started building at the beginning of the school year. The check was presented by an Allstate Foundation representative last Thursday.

The Blue Ridge Council of the Blind has purchased four closed circuit-TVs with a grant from Voice of the Blue Ridge. The units allow people with visual impairments to read ordinary text. The units were to be installed this week at the main branches of the Roanoke city and County libraries, at Virginia Western Community College and at the Montgomery County-Floyd Regional Library.
