THE TIPOFF

STOCK UP: on unique items from more than 100 merchants from across the United States at the Junior League of Roanoke Valley's major fund-raising event, the Stocked Market. The market will be at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, today 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. $5 admission (children 12 and younger, free) allows you to shop for all three days. ARTISTS & CRAFTS: One hundred artists from Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, West Virginia and Ohio will participate in the 27th annual YMCA Craft Fair in Virginia Tech's Squire's Student Center. New this year are porcelain sculptures, wrought iron, wheat weaving, drums and soft-sided luggage. Live music will range from jazz to bagpipes, and Saturday's lineup will include five entertaining, educational workshops. The fair's hours are today, noon - 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon - 5 p.m. Admission is free for Tech students with ID; for the general public it costs $1. Call 231-6860.

DIE LAUGHING: at the dastardly doings of the "Stage Door Slasher" and the cast and crew of a new musical, whom he stalks in Showtimers' production of "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940!" Performances at Showtimers' playhouse on McVitty Road, Roanoke, will run tonight through Nov. 24. Performances start at 8 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $8. GENTLEMEN'S QUARTETLY: The Virginia Gentlemen - Roanoke area's chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America Inc. - will hold its annual show Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Cave Spring High School auditorium. The "Oscar Night"-themed presentation will include performances by the 40-member gentlemen's chorus; the Time Was and A Touch of Harmony quartets; comedy group, The Chessie System; and Virginia Tech's 13-member a cappella singers, Juxtaposition. LIGHT NIGHT: Diwali, a major religious festival in India celebrating among other things wealth, good fortune and a new year, is marked by lighting numerous lamps and other lights. The India Association of Roanoke Valley's enlightening Diwali celebration will be held Saturday at Patrick Henry High School, with dinner starting promptly at 6:30 p.m. and various entertainment until 11 p.m.. Admission to the dress-up event costs $1 for association members or $2.50 for nonmembers. Call 366-1892.

SERIOUS STRINGERS: Sisters Cenovia and Stephanie Cummins have performed with such diverse artists as Leonard Bernstein, Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon and Smashing Pumpkins. Cellist Stephanie is a member of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and principal cellist for the Broadway revival of "The King and I." Violinist Cenovia is concertmaster of New York's Riverside Symphony Orchestra and associate concertmaster for the Broadway production of "Beauty and the Beast." The sisters will perform in downtown Roanoke on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, playing works by Bach, Handel, Ravel, Gershwin and a composition by Cenovia. EASE ON DOWN: (well, actually up) the road to the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center in Lynchburg for a mixture of rock, gospel, soul and banter that comprises the Tony award-winning musical "The Wiz." Performances will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, and at 8 p.m. Nov. 15-16 and Nov. 22-23. On Nov. 17, the show will be performed at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $7 to $12. Call (804) 846-3804.

WHICH WIDOWER WINS: is the tough decision that must be made by Widow Vogel in the romantic comedy centerpiece reading, "Soft Centers" Wednesday at Mill Mountain Theatre. Bring lunch to munch during the free 12:15 p.m. performance. Call 342-5740.

FRANKLIN FALLS: Kirk Franklin & The Family's Tour of Life concert scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium has been postponed. Franklin was injured a week ago when he fell 10 feet into an orchestra pit during a performance. The concert will be rescheduled when Franklin is able to resume performing. Tickets purchased for Thursday's show will be honored at that time. Call 981-1201.

FEED READS: The national Writers' Harvest benefit to combat hunger will feature Ed Falco, Jeff Mann, Lisa Norris, Simone Poirier-Bures, Lucinda Roy, Katherine Soniat and Gyorgyi Voros reading from their works Thursday at 7 p.m. at Volume Two Bookstore at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. A donation of $4 for students and $8 for the general public is recommended. Call 231-5138.

nAdrian Blevins-Church, R.H.W. Dillard, Cathryn Hankla, Jeanne Larsen, Opal Moore, Marilyn Moriarty and Eric Trethewey will read for the same cause in Hollins College's Green Drawing Room Thursday at 8 p.m., with a $10 general public/$5 student admission. Call 362-6451.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT: Today is Free Friday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Roanoke Valley History Museum, and 3:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Science Museum of Western Virginia, both located in Center in the Square in downtown Roanoke. This is a good opportunity before its last day, Sunday, to catch the quilt show at the history museum. Call 342-5770. BLOOM'S BARD: Internationally renowned British actress Claire Bloom made her Hollywood debut opposite Charlie Chaplin in "Limelight" and has since worked with such notables as Paul Scofield, Richard Burton, Woody Allen, John Geilgud and the Martha Graham Dance Company. On Nov. 16 at 8 p.m., she'll portray the women of Shakespeare - Desdemona, Viola, Portia, Katherine of Argon, Volumnia and Juliet - in a one-woman show on Washington and Lee University's Lee Keller stage in Lexington.
