BROOKHILL SCHOOL IN BEDFORD PLANS ALL-CLASS REUNION SUNDAY

BROOKHILL CLOSED as a public school in 1973, but alumni and staff will reunite at Bellevue Community Center in Goode on Sunday.

Although it's been four decades since Lucille Hughes Witt served hot meals daily to students at Brookhill School, she still remembers their favorite foods.

After nearly 10 years of cooking mostly the same meals, it's hard to forget, the former cook said.

The school in Bedford didn't have a cafeteria from 1944 to 1954, but Witt would cook in the kitchen, and students would eat in their classrooms.

Pinto beans and corn bread were favorites among most of the students, especially Glen Wilson, Witt said. James Earl Falls' favorite dish was grated carrots on peanut butter sandwiches. Frances Nichols Chappell liked hot rolls, while Mary Witt Potter favored homemade peanut butter cookies, Witt said.

Brookhill closed as a public school in 1973, but on Sunday, former students, staff - including Witt - and a few of the teachers are expected for a reunion at the Bellevue Community Center in Goode at 1 p.m.

Brook Hill opened in 1917 as a high school. When it became an elementary school 10 years later, the spelling of the name changed to Brookhill. Now it is operated as a private school by Brookhill Wesleyan Church.

Six of the reunion planners not only attended the school, but also taught there or at other Bedford County schools.

Because the reunion is the day before Veterans Day, the gathering will recognize the veterans, said Edith Elliott, a reunion organizer and former student.

A number of the school's former students went into the service and some served with Company A of the 29th Division's 116th Infantry regiment that invaded the Normandy coast of France on D-Day, she said.
