PUBLIC PULSE

Meetings at a glance

Upcoming:

* The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday because of Monday's observation of Veterans Day.

* The Radford City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Radford Municipal Building, also because of Veterans Day falling on its regular meeting day.

Council will review the terms of Scott Cable's reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. The Texas company does business as American Cable Entertainment in Radford. Its plans for recapitalization require the approval of its franchising authorities.

* Pulaski's Utilities Committee is supporting the routing of a proposed 765-kilovolt power line through the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, even though forestry officials have said no to the line. American Electric Power wants to build it from Wyoming County, W.Va., to Cloverdale but forestry officials argue that its appearance would detract from the natural beauty, and the need to cut trees away from it and maintain it would be a continuing burden and expense. Pulaski Councilman Charles Stewart told the town's Utilities Committee Friday that the result has been a hodge-podge of some 14 alternate route suggestions, including one through Giles County where landowners also are against being on the line's route. Mayor Andy Graham said the public is part of the national forest, too, and should have some say in whether the line goes through it as opposed to some more expensive path. Councilman John Johnston said he liked a pristine-looking national forest but agreed that the line would be a public benefit. "You cast a vote against it, you're saying, 'Well, I'm against growth,'" Stewart said. He said increased power needs are coming and AEP needs to be able to meet them. Town Council will not meet until Nov. 19, but its Utilities Committee agreed on the national forest route.
