MYSTICKS THWART EXPRESS

CHRIS LIPSETT scores twice in the third period, but it's not enough as Roanoke falls to Mobile 5-3.

Patrice Paquin tapped in a rebound at 17:04 of the third period, and the Mobile Mysticks went on to defeat the Roanoke Express 5-3 in an East Coast Hockey League game Friday night.

Express goaltender Dave Gagnon had made the initial save, but lost control of the puck, allowing Paquin to slide the rebound behind him to give the Mysticks a 4-3 lead.

Roanoke replaced Gagnon with an extra attacker in the closing moments of the game, but Mobile captain Bob Wood went the length of the ice to score an empty-net goal with five seconds left and give the Mysticks the final margin.

The Express (5-7-1) trailed 2-0 after the first period, despite two power-play opportunities.

In the second period, Roanoke's Bobby Brown scored his sixth goal of the season as the Express outshot Mobile 15-4.

Chris Lipsett found the net twice in the third period and Mobile (5-4-1) also scored as Roanoke tied the score at 3. The goals were Lipsett's fifth and sixth of the season.

The Express outshot Mobile 36-23 in the game.

Roanoke completes its six-game trip with a contest at 7:05 p.m. Sunday against the Baton Rouge Kingfish in Baton Rouge, La.

The Express returns home Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Richmond Renegades at the Roanoke Civic Center.
