BIG ISLAND CLERK HIT, ROBBED

A pair of men robbed a Big Island convenience store Friday after one hit the clerk in the head with a bottle.

About 6 p.m., one man entered the Big Island Food Mart on Virginia 501 and walked around, apparently casing the store. Only the cashier and a stock boy were in the store.

Fifteen minutes later, a second man came in and headed for the beer and wine cooler.

He bought a bottle of beer and, as the cashier opened the register drawer to make change, the customer hit her in the head with the bottle, knocking her unconscious, Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown said. The woman was treated at Lynchburg General Hospital and released.

The men made off with an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a late model white car, make unknown, that might have a broken trunk latch.

Brown said the store was robbed in a similar manner two years ago, in November 1994. No one was arrested for that robbery.

In both cases, the man who hit the cashier wore what police called a tan African heritage hat.
