MABE, James R., 68, local businessman of 131 12th Street, Pulaski, passed away Friday night, December 13,1996 in the Roanoke Memorial Rehab Hospital after a short illness with cancer. Born April 19, 1928, in Carroll County, Va., he was the son of the late James Madison Mabe and Rachael Lineberry Mabe. He was preceded in death by a brother, Silas Mabe and a sister, Helen Howlett. Forty years ago, he accepted Christ while living in Bluefield, Va. and recently rededicated his life to the Lord. His desire during his illness was to go to be with Jesus. He was known throughout Pulaski County and to his family for his special cooking abilities and for fund raising to help other Veterans and those in need. He started in Pulaski in 1968 with his dry cleaning business, One Hour Janetizing, and he employed many members of the community as the owner and operator of Pulaski Laundry and Rental Towel Service, retiring in 1993. He treated all of his employees special. He was a veteran of the United States Air Forces, having served during the Korean War. He has served as a State Commander for the V.F.W and also a Post Commander for the Pul aski V.F.W. Post #1184, of which he was a lifetime member. He was also an active member of the American Legion. He was proud of his country and served as a Sergeant in the Air Force while in the Korean War. He attended the Bob White Blvd. Church of God, Pulaski. Surviving are his wife, Cleta Grimes Mabe; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Noel O'Dell, Pulaski, Janet and Mike Cable, Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Sherry Mabe, Dublin; two special grandsons, Eric Worley and Philip Hayes; two stepgrandchildren, Clark and Brian O'Dell; three stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Hulda Howlett, Hillsville; and two brothers, Harry Mabe and Lanzy Mabe, both of Carroll County. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday from the Bob White Blvd. Church of God, with the Rev. Milton Carter, the Rev. James Shealey, the Rev. Robert Owens, Chaplain Sgt. Mike Honaker and the Rev. Greg Carter officiating. Interment will be in Old Dublin Cemetery. Visiting will be anytime after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski or anytime a the home, 131 12th St., Pulaski. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Pulaski V.F.W. Post #1184. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is in charge of arrangements.

MITCHELL, Veronica Lynn, 37, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 12, 1996. She was born in Roanoke to the late Edward and Frances Ferguson Mitchell. Survivors include two sons, Corey E . and Kevin L. Mitchell; two sisters, Francine M. Mitchell and Evelyn (Xavier) Fox; three brothers, Alfred B., Michael D. and Edward Wayne Mitchell, all of Roanoke; aunts and uncles, Doris Lamar, Marlene and Samuel Scott, Roanoke, Flontine and Roy Mitchell, North Carolina, Maryanna Mitchell, New Jersey, John and Bernice Ferguson, Roanoke, Condra Mitchell, North Carolina, and Thornton Bonds, Roanoke; brother-in-law, Alfred (Sharon) Fox; sister-in-law, Leslie Day, both of Roanoke; God father, Sam Henry, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. OLIVER, Sidney Lee, 78, of Blacksburg, died Friday, December 13, 1996, in the VA Medical Center, Salem. Memorial service will be held Sunday, December 15, 1996 at 2 p.m. at Slusser's Chapel Church of God with the Rev. Richard Gilbert officiating. OVERSTREET, Andrew Morris, (``Andy""), 67, of Daleville, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996 at his home. Andy was retired as a Captain in the U. S. Army and also from Sears-Roebuck. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Valle and Velma Simms and three brothers, Lynwood, Larry, and Griffin Overstreet. Andy is survived by his wife, Jean Poague Overstreet; one son, Samuel Morris Overstreet, Roanoke; one brother, Harold Overstreet, Roanoke; and his loved and loyal dogs, Maxwell and Duchess. Funeral services will be held at the Rader Daleville Chapel, 2 p.m. Monday, December 16, 1996, with the Rev. Paris E. Bain officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Union Cemetery. ROSE, Lillie Brinkley, 95, of Newport, died Friday evening, December 13, 1996 at her home. Born on January 3, 1901 in McClung, Bath County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Merritt Scott and Minnie Venable Brinkley. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pearisburg, and a part of the church family at First Christian Church of Newport; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ingles Chapter; a graduate of Madison College; had taught in the public schools of Bath and Giles Counties and the Mt. Tabor Nursery School; and during World War II, worked at Hercules Powder Company, RAAP as a Government Inspector. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bedford Dewey Rose and three children, Ramona Grey Howell, Bedford D. Rose, Jr., and Darrell Lanier Rose. Surviving are two sons, Lewis Kent Rose, Laurel, Md., George Scott Rose, Greenwood, Del.; three daughters, Bertha Carroll Marshall, Blacksburg, Shirley Rose Powell, Lakeland, Fla., and Eleanor Rose Pate, Greensboro, N. C.; one brother, Merritt Lewis Brinkley, Clifton Forge; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 16, 1996 at 1 p.m. in the First Christian Church of Newport, with the Pastor the Rev. Roger Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Newport Cemetery. SHERMAN, George Henry, 87, of Hardy, died Wednesday, December 11, 1996. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday, Flora Funeral Chapel. Graveside services 2 p.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, N.C. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount.

SINCLAIR, R. Bain, 88, of Roanoke, died F riday, December 13, 1996. Mr. Sinclair was a 1931 graduate of VMI, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in field artillery. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded six battle stars and the Bronze Star medal and Arrowhead for meritorious service from the Normandy Beach on into Germany. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1968 with the rank of Major. He was employed by American Gas and Electric Company for several years, and retired with many years of service from Appalachian Power Company as Chief Civil Engineer. He was a member and elder of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, and was a loyal member of the Triangle Sunday School Class. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Katherine S. Sinclair. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park on

Monday, December 16, at 10 a.m., with Dr. Tupper Garden officiating. A memorial service will follow at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

TAYLOR, Sally Olivia Shupe, 67, of Marion, died Saturday, December 14, 1996 in the Radford Hospital. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Smyth County and a graduate of the Marion College. She retired from the Southampton/Deerfield Correctional Farm in Capron, Va. She worked at the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education in Richmond for three years, and at the Southwestern State Hospital in Marion for many years as a secretary. She was employed by the State of Virginia for a total of 27 years. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sydney S. Taylor; her father, J. D. Shupe, Sr., and her sister Betty Harris. Surviving are one son, Michael S. Taylor, Baltimore, Md.; one daughter, Katrinia Brown, Eufaula, Ala.; mother, Mrs. Ella Kate Shupe, Marion; two brothers, J. D. Shupe, Jr., John and Janet Shupe, Marion; eight sisters, Mrs. Larry (Mary Lee) Morella, Rockville, Md., Mrs. Arlen (Lula Kate) Eller, New Market, Mrs. Blackie (Maria) Smith, Glade Spring, Mrs. Bobby (Joan) Snider, Glade Spring, Mrs. Peyton (Nette) Campbell, Marion, Mrs. Wiley (Jane) Colley, Marion, Mrs. Ford (Edith) Sage, Marion, Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Heffinger, Marion; four grandchildren, Michelle Harmon, Erin Taylor, Stephinie Brown and Jessica Brown; also surviving are 22 nieces and nephews; 28 great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Taylor will be held Monday Monday at 2:00 from the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Jividen and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. VAUGHAN, Christian Leann, 8, of Route 1, Box 361 AA, Spencer, died Thursday, December 12, 1996. Memorial services will be conducted at Starling Ave. Baptist Church, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at Patrick Henry Memorial Gardens, Patrick Springs, Va., at a later date. VAUGHAN, Taylor George, Jr., 72, of Galax and Roanoke, passed away Friday, December 13, 1996, at his home in Roanoke, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Vaughan is survived by his wife, Patricia Branscome Vaughan; son, Taylor Christian Vaughan; daughter, Martha Vaughan Ruman; three stepchildren, Lee Stanley Jesse, Hallie Stanley and John F. Stanley; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his brother, John B. Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan was born in Galax on September 10, 1924, the son of Taylor G. Vaughan, Sr. and Blanche Bassett Vaughan. He attended Galax City Schools and Fork Union Military Academy, where he graduated in 1942. He attended Virginia Military Institute until the spring of 1943, at which time he joined the U. S. Army. He served with distinction in the artillery of the 100th U. S. Army Division during their campaigns in Southern France and Germany during 1944 and 1945, being awarded the Bronze Star and rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After serving with the U. S. Occupation Army until the spring of 1946, he retired home and attended the College of William and Mary. He joined Vaughan Furniture Company in June of 1947 and continued working there until his death. He served in every capacity in his company, serving as President from 1955 to 1976, as Chief Executive Officer from 1955 to 1992 and as Chairman of the Board from 1962 until his death. He was also C.E.O. and Chairman of Webb Furniture Enterprises from its inception until his death. Mr. Vaughan dedicated his business life to the company his father founded in 1923 and as largely responsible for it's growth and success. A great supporter of all areas of the Furniture Industry, Mr. Vaughan served on the Board of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, the Boards of both of both the High Point and Atlanta Furniture Marketing Centers and on the Board of the Virginia Manufacturing Association. Mr. Vaughan served on the Virginia State Highway Commission and was largely responsible for many improvements and projects in Southwest Virginia. He was a driving force in the founding and building of Twin County Community Hospital in his home town of Galax. He was always interested in and supported many charities and served as Chairman of the Galax United Way. Vitally interested in education, Mr. Vaughan served on the Board of Trustees and as Chairman of Oak Hill Academy, the Board of Trustees at Fork Union Military Academy and was currently on the Board of Visitors at Emory and Henry University. He instituted the highly successful R.E.A.D. program at Vaughan Furni ture Company to give illiterate employees an opportunity to learn to read and write and to further their education. This program also provides Spanish American employees an opportunity to learn to speak, read and write English as a second language. Mr. Vaughan was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke and a past member of the First Baptist Church in Galax. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Galax at 11 a.m. Monday, December 16, with burial following at the Felts Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 1996. The family requests that no flowers be sent, but that contributions in his memory be sent to either the First Baptist Church, Galax, the Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke or the American Cancer Society

WEBB, James T., Sr., 80, of Christiansburg, departed this life Wednesday, December 11, 1996 at home, after a short illness. The viewing will precede the funeral from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, December 16, 1996, at the Belview United Methodist Church, Radford. Funeral services will start at 2 p.m. at the church, with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg.

WILCHER, Jesse L., (``Jack''), 81, died Friday, December 13, 1996. He was a resident of Eagle Rock. He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from the Lone Star Cement Co. He is survived by his wife, Edith Wilcher of Eagle Rock; a sister, Ella Pullen of Clifton Forge; five nieces; eight nephews. WILLIAMS, Alma M., 67, of Salem, passed away Friday, December 13, 1996. She was retired from Snyder's Nursing Home after 24 years of service. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Carol Thomas; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Mary Ann Thompson, Sumpter, S. C.; several nieces and nephews.
