Donor challenges others to give

CHRISTIANSBURG - An anonymous donor is pledging to give two dollars for every dollar other people give to the Humane Society of Montgomery County.

The donor is offering up to $25,000, meaning the Humane Society could reap $37,500 if other people pledge a total of $12,500.

Ron Brown, Humane Society director, said the money will be used for vinyl siding on the society's shelter on Flanagan Drive, new windows, a renovated bathroom, and an expanded office area.

Donations are tax deductible. They can be sent to P.O. Box 287, Blacksburg, Va., 24063.

For information, call the shelter at 382-1166.

'Structures' exhibit to visit museum

ROANOKE - The Virginia Museum of Transportation, 303 Norfolk Ave., announces the opening of a touring exhibit on Jan. 25, which will run through April 5.

"Structures," developed by the Franklin Institute Science Museum with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, was replicated for travel with help from the National Science Foundation.

The exhibit features twelve workstations and several large freestanding models where visitors can experiment with devices that explore different engineering principles. Younger visitors can assemble giant Tinkertoys into temporary structures of their own. Schools and groups are encouraged to schedule the workshop which can be held either at the Museum or in school classrooms.

Museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays noon-5 p.m. The Museum is closed on Mondays in January and February. Regular admission rates apply; group rates are available.

Other activities scheduled to coincide with the exhibit include two family days which will feature bridge building, a bus tour of bridges, and a lecture, "Building Bridges," by Emory Kemp. Call 342-5670 for more information.
