IN SERVICE

Two New River Valley men recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Both departed from Norfolk aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau.

Marine Lance Cpl. W.W. Bowman joined the Marine Corps in July 1995. He is the son of James Bowman Sr. of Radford.

Marine Lance Cpl. Charles A. Calfee graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1992. He is the son of Carolyn Calfee of Dublin.

Navy Lt. M.S. Wohlford recently returned from a six-month deployment to the western Pacific and Indian oceans. He was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. Wohlford is a graduate of Radford High School. He has a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Naval Academy. He is the son of W. Guy and Connie Wohlford of Radford.

Navy Fireman Edwin Isaacson has departed on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean. He is aboard the destroyer USS Hayler. He departed from his home port of Norfolk as part of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group. Isaacson joined the Navy in 1994. He is the son of Edwin Isaacson III of Christiansburg.

Marine Cpl. Jason S. Jarrells has reported for duty with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Jarrells was stationed at North Island Naval Base in San Diego until recently. Jarrells is a 1989 graduate of Pulaski County High School. He is the son of Donald and Margaret Jarrells of Pulaski. His wife is the former April Busic of Draper.

Army Pvt. Tracy D. Hawthorne has entered basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Hawthorne graduated from Christiansburg High in 1995. She is the daughter of Robert and Dee Hawthorne of Christiansburg.

Two area residents have graduated from basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Army Pvt. John T. Flinchum graduated from Pulaski County High School in May. He is the son of Warren and Linda Flinchum of Hiwassee.

Army Pvt. Tabatha Lawson graduated from Shawsville High School in 1990. She is the daughter of David and Irene Lawson of Elliston.
