ABBOTT, Roxie Helems Tingler, 78, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, December 26, 1996. She retired from General Electric after 25 years and was a member of the New Castle Christian Church. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde E. Tingler, Elza A. Abbott; parents, McKinley and Mae Helems; brothers, Merle Helems, Arnold Helems. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sue Tingler; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bob Hickman; grandchildren, Stephanie, Kimberly, David, Angela, Gregg and Matthew; great-grandson, Nathan David; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and May Helems, Hale and Jean Helems, Ruby Helems, Anna Faye Helems; also numerous nieces and nephews. BALLARD, Nadine Ayers, 62, of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 26, 1996, in a local hospital. Surviving are her husband, Charles C. Ballard; a son and his wife, Charlie and Rita Ballard; daughters, Cathy and husband, Jay Light, and Linda Ciafardini Latempa; brother, James Ayers; sisters, Elizabeth Broughman, Nellie Ayers, Evelyn and husband, James Tilley; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. BOSTIC, Julian Ward, Sr., 75, of New Castle, passed away Friday, December 27, 1996. He is survived by his children, Abigail Rieley and husband, Michael, Lucinda Cecil and husband, David, Margaret I. Bostic Jr. and wife, Sue; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Houston Bost ic, Lawrence Bostic; numerous sisters-in-law; nieces; and nephews. BOWYER, Agnes Updike, 83, of West Point, died Thursday, December 26, 1996. She was a member of First Baptist Church, West Point, and former member of Quaker Baptist Church in Body Camp. She is survived by her husband, Royal E. Bowyer; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Royal and Evelyn G. Bowyer of Danville; o ne sister, Florence U. Saunders of Salem; two grandchildren, Brooke B. Spence and Kenneth R. Bowyer, both of Danville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point. BRALLEY, Eugene G., Sr., 71, of Shawnee, Kan., passed away Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Shawnee, with entombment in Resurrection Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Amos Family Chapel in Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Mr. Bralley was born in Lindgraft, W.Va., and lived in the Shawnee area since since 1978. He was an Engineer-Auditor for Hercules Inc. for the past 40 years, spending the last 12 years with the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Bralley studied meteorology at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of the home; a son, Eugene G. Bralley Jr. of Lanexa, Kan.; daughters, Jaci Bralley Sciter of Shawnee and Cheryl Haney of Oakbrook, Ill.; five grandchildren; one brother, Moyer C. Bralley of Austinville, Va., and two sisters, Peggy Johnson of Austinville and Dorothy Goodman of Christiansburg, Va.

BRUGH, Martha Hooker, 82, of Jamesville, N.Y., and formerly of Botetourt County, Va., died Thursday, December 26, 1996, at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., after a brief illness. Mrs. Brugh was born in North Carolina and had lived in Richmond, Va., most of life. She moved to the Syracuse area and lived there for the last seven years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Richmond, and was also an active member of the Sunshine Circle for the Childrens Hospital in Richmond where she made intricate handcrafted Christmas ornaments to be sold to benefit the hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Goben E. Brugh, and is survived by two daughters, Susan Borel of Liverpool, N.Y., and Catherine Freeman of Richmond; two grandchildren, Anna Christine McKenzie of Richmond and Jennifer Borel of Liverpool; several nieces and nephews, and two brothers-in-law, Neville Brugh of Nace, Va., and Latane Brugh of Covington, Va. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 30, 1996, at the Rader Daleville Chapel in Daleville, Va., with the Rev. Jim George officiating. CALLANDS, William, 57, of Gretna, died Thursday, December 26, 1996, in Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke. Born in Pittsylvania County June 11, 1939, he was the son of the late Roy Callands and Mrs. Mattie Roach Callands; and was the husband of the late Brenda Callands. He was self-employed and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Mr. Callands is survived by six sons, Ronald, William Jr. and Terreance Callands, all of Roanoke, Cesare Callands of Lincolnton, N.C., Kareem Callands, Troutville, and Micah Callands of the U.S. Army stationed in Korea; one daughter, Patrenia Callands Robinson of Roanoke; two brothers, John Callands of Washington, D.C. and Fred Callands of Plainfield, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Fairfax of Plainfield, N.J.; one stepsister, Mrs. Otey Bell Harvey of Washington, D.C.; one daughter-in-law, Tasha Callands of Georgia; one son-in-law, Larry Robinson Sr. of Georgia; one grandson, Jovan Callands; one stepgrandson, Jonathan; and other relatives. COLEMAN, Thelma Oliver, 74, of Bedford, died Thursday, December 26, 1996, in a Lynchburg nursing home. She was born in Montgomery County on January 14, 1922, a daughter of the late George Oliver and Florence Barnett Oliver. She was the widow of Woodrow Wilson Coleman, a member of Bedford Christian Church, and owned and operated Thelma's Restaurant and Bill's Place in Bedford for many years. She was preceded in death by her brother, Hubert Oliver. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara C. and Ronnie C. Rice of Bedford, Mary L. and Buddy Wood of Lynchburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard L. Coleman of South Boston, Michael E. and Sandy Coleman of Springfield; a former daughter-in-law, Pat C. Coleman of Lynchburg; a brother, Roy Oliver of Smith Mountain Lake; three sisters, Lorraine O. Hodges of Rocky Mount, Lelia O. Austin of Salem, and Betty O. GRAYBILL, Juanita Norvelle, (``Weiter""), 79, died Thursday, December 26, 1996 at her home in North Garden, Va. She was born August 10, 1917, in Albemarle County. She was the daughter of the late Russell L. Norvelle and Perlie Mawyer Norvelle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Mason Graybill. She is survived by two daughters, Frances Kay Ferguson of Charlottesville, Mary Ardell Knott of Lyndhurst; a son, Mason Norvelle Graybill and his wife Gail of Shipman; special sister-in-law, Marie Graybill of Troutville; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Covesville, where the family suggests donations may be made. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon and evening at the home. GREGORY, Aline Turner, 75, of Salem, died Thursday, December 26, 1996. Loving mother of Robert Gregory, N orman Gregory, Judy Cuddy and Debra Hines took a beautiful trip to paradise on December 26, 1996. Jesus was waiting with open arms and welcomed her along with other family members already there and awaiting her arrival. Mama was preceded in death by the most loving daddy we ever knew, Robert Sr. Mom had eleven faithful grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and precious sister, Peggy Tolbert; and brother, Marvin Turner. Our beautiful mom adored us and encouraged us through all our lives. Our sweetest consolation is that she is finally without pain or worry with God, our father, in heaven. HALDREN, Elva Blankenship, 88, of Route 3, Vinton, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 26, 1996. She died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born May 19, 1908, daughter of the late Jacob and Fannie Blankenship of Salem. She was retired from American Viscose. She was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Anderson Haldren, and a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Dot Blankenship. Surviving are three sons, Harold A. and wife Louise F. Haldren of Princeton, W.Va., Douglas W. and wife Annie S. Haldren of Vinton, and Leon and wife Diane Haldren of Vinton; one daughter Nancy H. and husband Albert E. SPRADLIN, Howard Grady, Sr., 74, loving husband and father went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 26, 1996, at his home in Christiansburg. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Spradlin, and a sister, Thelma S. Fenton. He was a lifelong member of the Alleghany Church of Christ, where through the years he served the Lord faithfully as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and Trustee. Mr. Spradlin retired in 1991 with 42 years of service with the Virginia Tech Electric Service. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 53 years, Conston S. Spradlin; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Sam Smithwick of Christiansburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Jr. and Regina Spradlin of Summerfield, N.C., and Steve and Sharon Spradlin of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted from the Alleghany Church of Christ on Sunday, December 29, 1996, at 2 p.m., by Porter Riner and Eddie Callahan. WHANGER, Ernest G., 90 of Roanoke passed away Thursday, December 26, 1996 at home of a sudden illness. Mr. Whanger was born August 23, 1906 at Ronceverte, WVa. to the late Grant and Josie Livesay Whanger. Mr. Whanger was of the Methodist Faith. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, and of the Eastern Star, and worked for the Blue Ridge Park way in Roanoke, Va. Surviving are his wife, Ada Wiley Whanger; daughters, Loretta Sisson of Dallas, Texas, Mae Kaple of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sons, Earnest Whanger, Jr. of Boonesville, Va.; sisters, Nellie Johnson of Ronceverte, WVa., Ethel Long of Richmond; brother, Elbert Whanger of Durbin, WVa.; five grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service Saturday, December 28, 1996, 11 a.m. at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg, WVa. with the Rev. Ross Evans officiating

WILSON, R. Ross, 79, a resident of Statesville Manor, Statesville, N.C., and formerly of 107 Crestview Street, Galax, Va., passed away Thursday, December 26, 1996, at Statesville Manor. He was born on February 4, 1917, at Low Gap, N.C., to Fred and Eva Galyean Wilson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Nell Todd Wilson; daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Marv Adkins of Statesville, N.C.; son, Jeff Wilson of Carroll House, Hillsville, Va; brother and sister-in-law, Von and Jean Wilson of Galax; grandson, Todd Adkins of Charlotte, N.C., and granddaughter and spouse, Felicia and Greg Jordan of Charlotte. Funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 29, 1996, at 2 p.m., at Crossroads Primitive Baptist Church, Baywood, Va. Elder Terry Wilson and Elder Ken Hopkins will officiate. Interment will be in Felts Cemetery, Galax. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., and will be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the service to lie in state.
