CARLTON, Evie Rock, 95, of Vinton, passed away Monday, December 30, 1996 at the Berkshire Health Care Center, where she was a resident for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Fallie B. Rock and Carlos P. Carlton. Mrs. Carlton is survived by a daughter, Myrtle Lee Rock; a sister, Lucille W. Elmore, both of Roanoke. DENT, Debra Lynn Ferguson, 41, of Roanoke, passed from this life into another one Saturday, December 28, 1996. Jesus was waiting with open arms to welcome our Debra home. She was a graduate of Douglass School. She attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C., and did graduate studies at Hampton University. She was a teacher (retired) for the Galax City School System and was a long-standing member of Harris-Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and was a member of various educational and social organizations. Surviving are a sister, Ms. Myrtle Smith, Des Moines, Iowa; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Daniel Goins. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 1996, from Harris-Anderson AME Zion Church with the Rev. Sherman W. Forney officiating. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a wonderful homemaker, wife, and mother. Mrs. Hash enjoyed gardening and sewing. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Hash of Marion; one cousin, Retha Hamm of Elkton, Md.. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 2, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. HECK, Mabel Marshall, 93, a long-time resident of Roanoke, died at New Milford Nursing Home, New Milford, Conn. on Thursday, December 26, 1996. She was the wife of the late Raymond F. Heck Sr. Born March 2, 1903, in Buchanan, she was a daughter of the late John Elridge and Virginia Chilton Marshall. She was a graduate of the Buchanan High School, and a thirty-five year member of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church. Mabel was also active in the South Roanoke Garden Club. Mrs. Heck is survived by a son, Raymond F. Heck Jr., Sherman, Conn.; a sister, Thelma M. Overby; and a brother, Noble G. Marshall, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held in the Fair View Cemetery, Buchanan, Friday, January 3, 1997, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. HUNT, Helen Foster, 81, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, December 29, 1996. She was the widow of Posie Thomas Hunt. Helen was a faithful and active member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church until her recent declining health. She retired from J. P. Stevens Company after 40 years service. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Kermit Wood, Corolla, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Judy Hunt, Radford, David and Marie Hunt, Richmond; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clyde Foster and Benjaman T. Foster, both of Rocky Mount; one brother-in-law; and numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephew also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from Rocky Mount Baptist Church 11 a.m. Thursday, with Dr. Joe R. Bryant officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. MILLER, Jean Mason, 51, of Brooklyn, N. Y., formerly of Roanoke Va. , died Monday, December 30, 1996 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Carpenter; and is the daughter of Ethel and John Miller, Roanoke; and is also survived by her daughter, Jane Mason McManus, Brooklyn, N.Y.; her sister and brother-in-law, Jane Miller and Robert Colby, Larchmont, N.Y.; her niece and namesake, Jean Miller Colby, Larchmont, N.Y.; also an uncle and aunt, Phil and Marty Mason, Blacksburg, Va. and Mary Stuart Mason, Richmond, Va.; she also leaves a number of many special cousins. Jean graduated from Bryn Mawr College, and held an MBA from James Madison University and did Doctorate work at the University of Nebraska. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Roanoke.
MOTLEY, Buford Charles Sr., 70, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 28, 1996 at home. He was born April 20, 1926 and was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Charles. He was retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad with over 42 years of service and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Barbara M. Motley; his children, Carl E. and Linda Motley, Buford C. and Kelly Motley, Jr., Judith Y. and Vincent Pierce, Sr., all of Baltimore, Md., Jerome B. and Pamela Carey, Roanoke, Kirk Hampton, Petersburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert E. and Lorraine Macklin, Sr., Roanoke; sister-in-law, Barbara Macklin, Detroit, Mich.; brother-in-law, Harold Dean, Petersburg; mother-in-law, Alice Macklin, Roanoke; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was a long time employee of Kroger Stores and a 17 year dedicated LPN at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was loved and admired by all that worked with her. SCOTT, Francis D., (``Scotty''), 76, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, December 29, 1996. He was born February 5, 1920, the son of Wista Hamilton Scott and Nora Mae Craft Scott. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Scott was a retired manager of Employee Benefits from the N & W Railway, after 39 years of service, and a former Scout Master of Troop #235 Vinton. Surviving are his wife, Alpha Booth Scott; three children, Francis David Scott, Jr. and wife Lynda, Vinton, Susan Scott Anderson and husband Danny Lee, Roanoke, Carolyn Booth Scott, Vinton; three grandchildren, Wyatt David Scott, Sherry Lee Anderson, Gina H. She was born on January 16, 1929 in Christiansburg, and she retired from Hercules, Inc. after 25 years of service. She is survived by four daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Shaver, Narrows, Sue Shaver and Margie Shaver, both of Blacksburg, and Pam and Dennis Sweeney, Radford; a son and daughter-in-law, Captain Charles and Virginia Shaver, Montgomery, Ala.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beulah Miles, North Carolina, Josephine Jones, Christiansburg, Jane Moses, Maryland; and a brother, Ernie Frazier, Blacksburg. SMITH, James Ransom, Jr., (``Smitty""), 66, of Sanford, N.C., died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 1996, in Central Carolina Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Linda Rhodes Smith of the home. Born in Johnston County, N.C., on May 17, 1930, his parents were the late James Ransom Smith Sr. and Ida Sullivan Smith. He was a retired employee of the United States Government, and was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 1997, in Mount Union Cemetery in Troutville, Va., with the Rev. David Jackson officiating. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Belinda Southard of Elon College, N.C.; a son, W. F. Smith of Elon College; a brother, Coy A. Smith of Mebane, N.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Hamilton of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Mrs. Margaret Fabroni of Hope Mills, N.C., Mrs. Earline Copley of Graham and Mrs. Geraldine Baucom of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Aulden and Brooks Smith, and Misty Overman; a special sister-in-law, Billie Faye Smith, and a daughter-in-law, Dana Smith. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home, 1030 South Main Street, Graham, from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, and other times at the home of his brother, Coy A. Smith, 1253 Holmes Lane, Mebane. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
SOWDER, Helen Gail Beavers, 64, of Rt. 6, Bedford, passed away Sunday, December 29, 1996. Surviving are her husband, Keith Sowder; her son, Greg Sowder, Roanoke; her grandchildren, Stephanie and Daniel Sowder; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Douglas Whitt, Charlotte, N.C., Joan and David Barton, Princeton, W. Va.; also surviving are a number of neices and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 10 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 1997 with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow i n Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Lotz Roanoke Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
SPENCE, Beulah Gearhart, 84, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, December 29, 1996 at her home. She was a resident of Baltimore Md. for over 20 years and a resident of Virginia Beach, Va. for 15 years. She was a former member of London Bridge Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, and a member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Myrtle C. and Garland Anderson, Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Karen A. Bonney, Warner Robins, Ga., April C. Anderson, Alexandria; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 10 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 1997 with Pastor Bruce Huffman officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg, Va. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main St., Rocky Mount.
SPENCER, Joseph Norman Jr., 74, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Salem, Va. passed away Sunday, December 29, 1996. Mr. Spencer was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad and was a member of Taylor Masonic Lodge, Salem. He is survived by his wife, Louise Spencer; sons and daughter-in-law, John and Sharon Spencer, Gerald Spencer Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Calvin Wilson; grandchildren, Jason and wife, Laurie Spencer, Christine Spencer, Ma rlina Spencer, Gerald L. Spencer Jr., Christopher Wilson; Andrew Wilson; brother and sister-in-law, Oma L. and Edna Spencer. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 1996 at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. STEWARD, Angelia M., 21, of Bedford, died Saturday, December 28, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 1997, at Washington Street Baptist Church in Bedford. Interment will follow in the Payne family cemetery in Bedford County. TAYLOR, Cecil Wood of Elon died Thursday, December 19, 1996 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Mr. Taylor was born December 5, 1917. He was the son of the late John Edwards Taylor and Mary Hannah Wood. He received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from Washington and Lee University. Upon graduation, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation from which he resigned in 1942 to join the United States Navy. He served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet as an intelligence officer in the Pacific Theatre with the rank of Lieutenant, and was awarded the bronze star. Upon his return from the service in 1945, Mr. Taylor engaged in the practice of law from then until the time of his death. He was a partner in the Lynchburg firm of Martin, Taylor, and Perrow. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Piedmont Club, and had been active in both state and local politics. He was also a member of the Va. State Bar and Va. Bar Association. In 1948 he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates where he served until 1954. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Bantel Taylor of the home; two daughters, Lida Terrell Taylor of Dallas, Texas, Mary Taylor Linn of Roanoke; one son, Cecil W. Taylor. of Reston; two brothers, James D. Taylor, Robert B. Taylor; one sister, Harriet T. Ramsey; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services were December 21 at Spring Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Robert A. Wilson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stedman Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund, F&M Bank, Lovingston, VA 22949, or a charity of your choice. Whitten Park Avenue Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
