NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

"Mind your p's and q's!"

Do your children know what that means?

Radford resident Linda Ives recently was certified as a Children's Etiquette Consultant at a training class conducted by The Protocol School of Washington, D.C. Having grown up in a military family where meeting new people and observing customs in other countries was routine, she has always been interested in human relations and the importance of good manners.

"Parents are now more aware of teaching values to their children," she said, commenting on the present trend toward the return to traditional family values. She plans to begin her classes in children's etiquette in early summer this year in Radford.

Ives was an Army protocol officer for 21/2 years after attending college at the University of Hawaii and the College of William and Mary, and has two education degrees and a degree in human resources.

She and her husband, Phillip Rymiszewski, who works for Corning Inc., moved to Virginia in 1990. Ives taught school in Shawsville and was president of the Montgomery County Education Association 1992-1993.

Four New River Valley artists won awards recently in the 11th annual Bristol Art Guild juried exhibition in Bristol, Va. Awards of Excellence went to Z.L. Feng of Radford for "The Rock (Tibet)"; Yumiko Ichikawa, Radford, for "Contemplation"; Sally Mook, Blacksburg, for "Fantasy #1 Lady with Blue Hair"; and Mei Shu of Radford for "Stone Bridge Town."

Ichikawa also won an Award of Merit and the popular vote award for "Still Life #6."

George W. Bandy Jr. of Copper Hill and Vester L. and Alma Lou Manning of Meadow Run Dairy, Copper Hill, received recognition recently from the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative at the local district meeting in Floyd. They received a gift certificate, plaque and quality producer farm sign for production of milk that qualified for premium status all 12 months.

Joseph D. Bishop of Riner also received recognition for production of premium milk 11 out of the last 12 months.

Jean Simmons of Townside Realtors Inc. in Blacksburg was elected 1997 Virginia governor of the Women's Council of Realtors during its annual convention in San Francisco, Nov. 12-17. The elected governors are responsible for increasing membership, encouraging participation and chartering new chapters.

Radford artist Kendall F. Kessler's biography will appear in the original Marquis Who's Who and Who's Who of American Women. Kessler recently had two shows at Agora Gallery in New York City.

Montgomery County Planning Commission member, Kathryn A. Brennan of Riner, was among the graduating class of the 25th Virginia Certified Planning Commissioners' Program on Dec. 13. The 10-week certification program consisted of classroom instruction, home study and workshop exercises.

New board members and officers of the Mental Health Association of the New River Valley were elected at the annual banquet on Nov. 14. The new officers are: Marie Moon Painter, president; Tyrone Hash, president-elect; Mary Stuart Cosby, vice president; Beth Shelor, secretary; Judy Beazley and Connie Pratt, treasurers.

New board members are Karen Casteele, Dennis Cogswell, Geri Glass, C. Alan Harvey, Tammy Heft, Robert Hendrickson, Maureen Horner-Noftsinger, Heidi Levine, and Samantha Painter Willard.
