KEYDETS MEET WITH CANDIDATE

N.C. STATE'S TED CAIN, an offensive coordinator, could be offered the head coaching job at VMI today.

North Carolina State offensive coordinator Ted Cain met with VMI's football coaching staff Thursday and school officials are hopeful he will be the Keydets' next head football coach.

Cain, 44, was in Lexington on Thursday to interview with full-time members of this past season's Keydet staff. The interviews were held in part to allow VMI's assistants to get to know Cain and compare notes. It also was an opportunity for VMI's assistants to tell Cain they were as interested in him as VMI's search committee, headed by athletic director Davis Babb.

Babb said Thursday night that Cain had not yet been offered the job, but added, ``The day's not over.''

More than one person close to the school and its football program said as early as Wednesday that the committee had made its choice, and that's why Cain was brought to Lexington for a second time. If Cain is agreeable, the job would be his. A formal announcement could come as early as this afternoon.

Cain could not be reached for comment Thursday and messages left at his office earlier this week were not returned. If Cain and VMI cannot come to an agreement, the school's search most likely would turn to Miami (Ohio) offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and then to its two internal candidates, assistant head coach Donnie Ross and defensive coordinator Chip Garber.

Cain, a native of Aiken, S.C., was a tight end at Furman from 1971-73. Following his 1974 graduation, he served as a first lieutenant and platoon leader for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Benning, Ga. He was an assistant coach on offense and defense at Furman from 1977 to 1985 and has been N.C. State's offensive coordinator since 1986.
