JUDGE SETS BOND FOR YOUTH

A Roanoke Juvenile Court judge set bond Thursday morning for one of the two teen-agers charged with killing a man on a Southwest Roanoke street in December.

Keith Riles, 17, and Michael Shrawn Benton, 19, were charged with shooting Larry Edward Donahue to death in the 1300 block of Chapman Avenue. Police found Donahue, 33, on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head Dec. 30. Riles and Benton were arrested Sunday.

Thursday, Judge John Ferguson set a $10,000 secure bond for Riles, who was at Coyner Springs Juvenile Detention Home. As of Thursday afternoon, Riles had not posted bond.

If Riles does make bail, the judge ordered that he be released to his mother, Hattie Brown. He also would be placed on detention outreach, which means he would be monitored by Juvenile Court counselors, said Riles' court-appointed attorney, Onzlee Ware. Riles' preliminary hearing is scheduled Feb. 3 in juvenile court.

Benton is being held without bond in Roanoke City Jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 30 in General District Court.
