LIBERTY STINGS BEES BY 40

It's risky to give Liberty one chance to shoot for the basket. It's disastrous to give the Minutemen two.

Liberty, ranked No. 2 in Group AA, dominated the offensive boards Tuesday night and rolled to a 96-56 Seminole District victory over Brookville in Lyncburg.

The Bees had 20 turnovers in the first half and 28 for the game. The Minutemen led by 25 points at the break and increased their lead each quarter.

Liberty (10-1 overall, 4-0 district) spread the scoring around, with 12 players getting in the books.

Raymond ``Peanut'' Arrington led the way with 19 points and Rodney Morris was next with 17. Brandon Mills scored 10.

Brookville got 11 points from John Gordon and eight rebounds from P.J. Townes.

Parry McCluer 69, Wilson Memorial 39: Unbeaten Parry McCluer used a 20-7 third quarter run to pull away from the winless Green Hornets in a non-district game in Fishersville.

The Blues (11-0), ranked second in this week's Group A poll, were led by David Coleman, who scored seven of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter. Mike Decker added 14 for Parry McCluer.

Andrew Wymer led Wilson Memorial (0-11) with 18 points. Wymer accounted for four of the Green Hornets' six second-half field goals, with three coming from 3-point range.

Rustburg 51, Staunton River 49: Franklin Haislip got an offensive rebound and made a short shot at the buzzer as the Red Devils won a Seminole District game in Moneta.

Staunton River (4-8, 1-4) had tied the score 49-49 when Matt Roberts made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left. Roberts led the Golden Eagles with 22 points.

Rustburg got a team-high 17 points from Joey Abrams. Haislip added 10.

Martinsville 85, Patrick County 77: Leander Preston scored 11 fourth-quarter points to lead the Bulldogs to the Piedmont District victory in Stuart.

The Cougars (6-5, 1-1), who trailed by four after three periods, came back to take a 71-70 lead with three minutes remaining. Preston, who scored 19 points in the game, then keyed an 8-0 Martinsville run that sealed the verdict.

The Bulldogs (6-5, 2-0), who hit 14 of 19 free throws in the final period, were led by Jelcey Green's 21 points. Isaac Gravely scored 16.

Patrick County's Corey Reynolds led all scorers with 36 points. Aaron Green added 10 for the Cougars.

Bland 67, Pocahontas 42: The Rockets broke open a close game late in the third quarter to notch a Mountain Empire District victory in Bland.

Bland (8-2, 3-0) led 41-36 with four minutes left in the third quarter before Pocahontas (0-7) went into a scoring drought.

Heath Puckett had 15 points and Lee Meadows added 14 for Bland.

Highland 84, Craig County 67: Jacob Hull scored 27 points as Rams (7-0, 1-0) defeated the Rockets (1-5, 0-1) in their first Pioneer District game in Monterey.

Bryan Werner scored eight of his 24 points in the third quarter as the Rams outscored the Rockets 23-13 to extend their lead to 61-40. Josh Perdue and Brad Armstrong added 10 points each.

Dwayne Crawford led the Rockets with 23 points.

Magna Vista 62, Fieldale-Collinsville 53: Landar Martin scored 20 first half-points as the Warriors built a 44-28 lead at the break and held on for a Piedmont District victory in Collinsville.

The Cavaliers (4-8, 0-2) staged a fourth-quarter comeback and cut their deficit to 59-53 with one minute to play. Fieldale-Collinsville got the ball back, but a missed 3-pointer and turnovers down the stretch sealed the Cavaliers' fate.

Martin led Magna Vista (8-3, 2-0) with 23 points. Phillip Hairston and Marco Taylor each scored 14 for Fieldale-Collinsville.

Grayson County 66, Rocky Gap 50: Brad Elkins scored 17 points and Travis Archer added 16 as the Blue Devils (7-2, 2-0) defeated the Eagles (3-7, 1-3) in a Mountain Empire District game in Independence.

Elkins and Archer combined for 14 points in the first quarter and the Blue Devils jumped to a 13-0 lead to start the game. Derek Phipps contributed 10 points and Wes Self had 14 rebounds and eight points for Grayson County.

Matthew Akers led the Eagles with 14 points.

Gateway Christian 47, Christian Heritage 40: Scott Perfater scored eight of his 16 points in the second quarter as the Crusaders (6-4) downed Christian Heritage (0-1) in a non-conference matchup in Rocky Mount.

Chris Kirtner also scored 16 points for the Crusaders and Brad Duncan added 11. The score was tied 40-40 with about two minutes remaining, but the Crusaders switched to a man defense and scored the last seven points of the game.

Floyd County 97, Shawsville 52: Senior point guard Adam Harris was 6-of-6 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 23 points as the Buffaloes downed Shawsville in Floyd.

Harris keyed Floyd County's transition game, which rolled up a season high in points. The Buffaloes' 3-point proficiency helped as much as the pace, however. Floyd County (11-0 overall, 2-0 Three Rivers District) was 12-of-17 from 3-point range as a team.

Chris Graham led Shawsville (1-9, 0-1) with 11 points.

Travis Cantrell added 21 points (12 in the first quarter) for the Buffaloes, while Jason Dalton had 15 and Brian Swortzel and T.J. Holfield had 10 apiece.

Floyd County is ranked No.1 in Group A.

Galax 68, Fort Chiswell 51: Michael Shumate scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Maroon Tide picked up a Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers in Galax.

After scoring only nine points in the second quarter, the Maroon Tide (5-5, 2-0) stepped up on defense with a man press which created more offense. Mac Garner added 11 points and Scott Hall had 10. B.B. Brown contributed seven points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

Heath Bralley led the Pioneers (6-4, 2-1) with 13 points.

Bassett 41, Laurel Park 39: Andre Fuller's layup at the buzzer was the game-winner, as the Bengals, despite a poor shooting night, pulled a Piedmont District upset in a low-scoring affair in Bassett.

Bassett (4-8 overall, 1-1 district) made only 16 of 47 field-goal attempts and was led by Fuller's 13 points. Josh Crabtree's 3-point goal with nine seconds left had tied the game for the Lancers (8-3, 0-2), who were led by Tony Carter's 10 points.

Covington Boys' Home 56, Meadowbridge Christian (W.Va.) 33: Mike White scored a game-high 24 points and dished six assists as the Indians won a non-district game over Meadowbridge Christian (W. Va.) in Covington.

Marco Mejia added 16 points and Chris Hampton had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (5-5).

Phillip Truttman led Meadowbridge Christian (1-4) with 10 points.

George Wythe 71, John Battle 39: Brian Barnes and Justin Bourne led the hot-shooting Maroons to the Hogoheegee District victory in Bristol.

Barnes scored 17 points and hit all eight of his field-goal attempts, while Bourne had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. George Wythe was 30-of-44 (68.2) from the field.

John Odom had 13 points and John Taylor added 10 for John Battle.

Giles 75, Auburn 61: Steals and assists. Steals and assists.

That's how the Spartans won their Three Rivers District matchup against the Eagles in Pearisburg.

Jason Edwards had five steals and five assists, but that wasn't all for Giles. Robbie Claytor had six assists and Ben Brown had five.

The thievery contributed to a fourth quarter in which the Spartans pushed the ball upcourt and outscored Auburn 24-15.

Claytor led Giles (7-4 overall, 2-0 Three Rivers) with 22 points and Ben Brown had 16. Phil Morris led the Eagles (2-8, 0-2) with 20, Josh Vaughn had 11 and Ryan Nolan and Adam Loveday had 10 apiece.
