Don Mattingly, the greatest New York Yankee never to appear in a World Series, officially retired from baseball. Mattingly, 35, has not played since 1995 and was plagued by back problems during his final few seasons. A six-time All-Star, Mattingly hit .307 with 222 home runs and 1,099 RBI during his 13-year career.

Oksana Baiul, the Olympic champion figure skater facing drunken driving charges, was traveling at close to 100 mph when she ran her car off the road Jan.12 in Bloomfield, Conn., police estimated. Baiul, a 19-year-old Ukranian who lives in Simsbury, Conn., was charged with reckless and drunken driving in the crash, which left her with a cut scalp and a concussion. She is due in West Hartford (Conn.) Superior Court on Monday.
