ANDERSON, Anne Wallace, 79, of Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, January 22, 1997, at her home. She was the widow of Julius Harris and was retired owner of Harris Office Furniture in Roanoke. She was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue. Surviving are her husband, Clifton A. Anderson, Palm Beach, Fla.; son, Kurt K. Harris, Beaverton, Ore.; three sisters, Ida W. Siglin, Indian Springs, Fla., Ruth W. Feingold, Little Washington, N.Y., Sophia W. BLANKENSHIP, Esther Howell, 77, of 503 9th Street, Altavista, died Wednesday, January 22, 1997, in Camelot Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Ben Henry Blankenship S r. Born February 3, 1919 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Oakey T. Howell and Lizzie Daniel Howell. She was a retired vice president of Altavista Hardware, Inc., and a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Ben Henry (B.H.) Blankenship Jr. of Altavista; a sister, Loretta Plymale of Kernersville, N.C.; two brothers, Edward Howell of Phoenix Ariz., Alfred Howell of Huddleston. DELLIS, Una O., 84, of Huddleston, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 1997, in a local nursing home. She was born Janu ary 24, 1912 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Alonza Overstreet and Hettie Howell Overstreet. Her husband was the late Robert J. Dellis. She was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Leigh Dellis, Hoyt and Judy Dellis, Shirrell and Helen Dellis, all of Huddleston; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirlene and Pete Tuck, Huddleston; a brother, Moorman Overstreet, Roanoke; a sister, Letha O. DUDLEY, Cary Winstead, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, January 22, 1997. Mr. Dudl ey was born in Callao, Va., on December 14, 1907, to the late Benjamin Winstead and Florence Weymouth. She was a member of Henderson United Methodist Church. Mrs. Dudley attended Mary Washington College and graduated from Retreat Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond. She was the wife of the late Sheridan Cabell Dudley; and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Sheridan Cabell, Jr. and Elizabeth Dudley of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Amanda W. Dudley and Jennifer C. Dudley, both of Lynchburg, Carrington C. FRENCH, Gladys Goff, 84, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997 in the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, Va. Mrs. French was a member of West End United Methodist Church in Wytheville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. French, Sr. Survivors include one son, Robert B. ``Bob"" French, Jr., Abingdon; one daughter, June Cardwell, Wytheville; two sisters, Edna Henderson, Bristol, Tenn., Flo Knutson of Florida; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. HARLESS, Christopher Paul, 13, of Bastian, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997, in the Princeton Community Hospital. He was born June 13, 1983 in Princeton, W.Va., the son of David Wayne and Mary Childress Harless, Bastian. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Andrew Harless, Bastian; maternal grandmother, Eunice Shrader Childress, Bastian; paternal grandmother, Elsie Tabor Harless, Rocky Gap; several uncles, aunts, and cousins. LONG, Ira Hubert Sr., 85, of 411 Carriage Hill Drive, Pulaski, died Tuesday night, January 21, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski County on July 4, 1911, and was the son of the late John Montgomery Long and Lillie Belle Mabe Long. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. He was preceded in death by one son, Ira Hubert Long Jr. Surviving are his wife, Grace Slusher Long, Pulaski; four daughters, Iris Kanode, Pulaski, Brenda Faw, Vinton, Doris Lewis, Draper, Linda Peak, Radford; one son, Roger L. PARRIS, Leon B., 75 of Salem passed Wednesday, January 22, 1997. Mr. Parris served in World War I I in Italy and Africa. He was a lifetime member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hall Parris; son and daughter-in-law, Adrian and Cynthia Parris; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Gene Smith, Lynda and James Breedlove; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Edward Hollandsworth; brother and sister-in-law, Hubert P. POOLE, William E., (``Bill''), 58, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He served two tours during the Vietnam era as a Navy SEAL. He earned several medals, including the Purple Heart. After his military service he was a Deputy with Roanoke County for 15 years. He was a member of Red Hill Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Edith Mottley Poole; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bob Johnson, Roanoke, Terri and Mike Janosky, Waynesboro, Jodi and Billy Leffue, Roanoke; six granddaughters, Lauren, Caitlin, Micah, Kelsie, Micala and McKenzie; sister, Joyce Moore, Clarksville, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Red Hill Church of the Brethren conducted by G. Ernest Deyerle II, Pastor. Interment will follow in Churchill Cemetery, Salem. SALO, Paul Emil, 78, of Roanoke, formerly of Wixom, Mich., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 1997. He was a parole officer for the State of Michigan for thirty years, a former member of the Zoning Board for the City of Wixom, Mich. Mr. Salo was an active member of the Michigan State Employee Association and worked diligently for retiree benefits. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Elna A. Salo, Roanoke; three children, Neil, Anne, and Martha; nine grandchildren, Carla, Eric, Stephen, Aaron, Jason, Angela, Teal, Joshua, and Allison. SMITH, Conway Howard, 89, formerly of Pulaski, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997 in St. Louis, Ms. Born in Pulaski, December 19, 1907. He was the son of the late Lewis Edward Smith and Eva Howard Smith. Mr. Smith owned and operated B. D. Smith Brothers, a local print shop for 45 years. He was an author, writing 3 books about Pulaski County. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy, in Okinawa. He was a Mason for 67 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Williams Smith; one daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Michael Wick, St. Louis, Ms. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. VAUGHAN, Spurgeon Onice, 87, of 3845 Angier Ave., Durham, N.C., formerly of Montvale, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. Mr. Vaughan was born in Durham, son of the late Spurgeon and Mollie Jones Vaughan. He was educated in the Durham County schools. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church, a Deacon and a member of the S. S. Little Sunday School Class. Mr. Vaughan was a retired dairy farmer. Va., son of the late Sparrell Viars and Myrtle Mabry Viars. He was employed at Martinsville Novelty, with 15 years of service. He was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church. WOODFORD, Edwin Bennett, (``Ted''), 81, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 1997, in a local nursing home. He was born December 17, 1915 in Campbell County, a son of the late John D. Woodford and Sallie Updike Woodford. He was a former Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and Youth Leader at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, was a charter member of the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department and the Moneta Ruritan Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theatre Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon. He is survived by his wife, Ada Johnson Woodford; a brother and sister-in-law, Warren R. and Pearl Woodford, Roanoke; a sister, Florine W. Nuckolds, Huddleston. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 24, 1997, at 11 a.m. from the Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Jones. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, and requests that those wishing to make memorials consider the Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church.
