Problems run deeper than gender

With regards to the letter to the Sports Mailbag from Heather Carter on Jan. 18, Heather, everything you said I agree with. Qualification should be the same for all.

However, you must remember athletes bring big money into the schools with their athletic ability. Some schools don't worry about the athlete after they use all their sports eligibility. It is like the year that Dean Smith had the basketball player who some years back could not read the road signs to get home. He owned up to it. But these are our future leaders of this country. Isn't that frightening? So Heather, we will just sit back and watch them hit heads and maybe after graduation we can help guide some of them home.

Football teams deserved coverage

I disagree (with Mary Cruz) that hundreds are sick of your coverage of Tech/Virginia football. Quite the opposite is true - it's been outstanding this year - and the teams deserve the press you have given.

I cheer for both teams except when UVa plays Tech; then, it's VPI all the way.
