IN SERVICE

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Laura K. Stellrecht has departed on a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf and Western Pacific Ocean aboard the destroyer USS Fletcher. Stellrecht joined the Navy in 1988. She is the daughter of Suzanne and Robert Smith Jr. of Blacksburg.

Army Spec. Anthony T. Carr graduated from the U.S. Army Primary Leadership Development Course at Fort Drum, Watertown, N.Y. He now is assigned to Fort Lewis, Wash., and is on temporary assignment in Honduras. He is expected to return to the states at the end of January. He will thengo to Japan for six weeks.

Carr previously was a prime power production specialist at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax. He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1989. He is married to the former Sonia Stoneburner. He is the son of Ronald and Marti Carr of Dublin.

Army Pvt. Richard Cato graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Radcliff, Ky. He is the son of Lisa Truett of Newport.

Lee A. Lagan recently joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Christiansburg. Lagan will has the opportunity to delay enlistment into the Army for up to one year before reporting to basic military training.

Lagan graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1993. He will report to Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. for basic training this month. He is the son of Henry and Lota Lagan of Blacksburg.

Army Pvt. Gregory A. Turpin recently reported for duty at Camp Humphreys in South Korea. Turpin is an aviation operations specialist. He graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1996. He is the son of Ray and Debbie Turpin of Christiansburg.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Gary W. Burris, has received a Letter of Appreciation during his assignment aboard the combat support ship USS Supply, homeported in Norfolk. Burris is recognized for his superior performance of duty. Burris graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1984 and joined the Navy in 1991. He is the son of Marvin and Mary Burris of Pulaski.

Coast guard fireman apprentice David J. Dean, son of David Dean of Christiansburg, has graduated from recruit training and has been promoted to his current rank. He attended the training program at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, Cape May, N.J.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Sterling P. Silver recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Persion Gulf and western Pacific Ocean aboard the destroyer USS Leftwich. Silver graduated from Giles County High School in 1990 and joined the Navy in June of that year. He is the son of Sterling and Jill Silver of Pearisburg.
