ALDERMAN, Arnold R., 86, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, January 25, 1997, in a Montgomery County hospital. He was the operator of Southside Texaco for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gatha Huff Alderman. Surviving are three sisters, Anna F. Alderman and Irene A. Presgraves of Radford and Gay Alderman of Blacksburg; two brothers, Elmer Alderman of Madison, N.C., and Ernest H. Alderman of Radford; one sister-in-law, Alzora H. Wood of Floyd; three brothers-in-law, Edmond Huff, Jack Huff and Coolidge Huff of Floyd, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, at Gardner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Survivors include two sisters, Irene Presgraves and Anna Alderman, both of Radford; two brothers, Earnest Alderman, Radford, Elmer Alderman, Madison, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. BENNINGTON, Kenton Blair, Jr., (``K.B.'') 49, of Lexington, died Thursday, January 23, 1997 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born January 30, 1947 in Lexington, he was the son of Willetta McDaniel Bennington and the late Kenton B. Bennington, Sr. K.B . was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam and a member of the Lexington Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of Bennington Excavating. Surviving in addition to his mother, Willetta McDaniel Bennington of Lexington; his wife, Melody M. Bennington, Lexington; a son, Bryne Kevin Bennington, Roanoke; two sisters, Phyllis L. Bennington-Tardy and husband, David J. Tardy, Lexington, Debra A. Bennington, Lexington; several nieces and nephews. BROWN, Mary Vial, 91, of Glendale Road, Galax, died Tuesday, January 14, 1997, in Blue Ridge Highlands Nursing Home. She was born October 6, 1905 in Martinsville, daughter of the late Fredrick R. and Marietta Burge Brown. She was the executive secretary to the President and CEO of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company from 1931 until her reti rement in 1971. She served as secretary to both the founder, her uncle, B. C. Vaughan, until his death in 1962, and then she was secretary to C. W. Higgins Jr. until her retirement in 1971. She is survived by various cousins, including Mrs. Wyatt P. Exum of Galax, Mrs. Thomas Andrews of Martinsville, Mrs. Kenneth Whitener of Martinsville. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, at Felts Cemetery with Rev. BURTON, Steven Edward, 27, of Christiansburg, died suddenly, Thursday night, January 23, 1997, as the result of an automobile accident. GRAVES, Charles Lee, 92, of Blacksburg, died Friday, January 24, 1997, in Radford Community Hospital. He was born on December 25, 1904, to the late Joseph Willard and Lily Frances Caldwell Graves. Mr. Graves was a native of Montgomery County where he was a home builder from the mid 1930's - 1950's. He was the Founder, President and Chairman of the Board of Graves Construction Company, where he built the Gilbert Linkous Elementary School, the Glenvar High School in Salem, and was the initial contractor of Wytheville Community College, as well as many other major projects in the area. He was also the Founder and Co-owner of G. & W Building Supply, which was operated in Blacksburg from 1948 - 1960. He retired in 1966 and moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where he was a resident for six months of each year. He was a member of Blacksburg First Wesleyan Church, and also was a pilot and member of the Aircraft Owners Association (A.O.P.A.). Mr. Graves was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Lorna Moore Graves, and a son, William H. ``Bill"" Graves. Survivors include two sons, Eddie Joe Graves, Roanoke, Sammey R. Graves, Blacksburg; a daughter, Wanda L. Dillon, Blacksburg; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Brookner, Blacksburg, Margaret Shaver, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 27, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Blacksburg First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. John Hopkins officiating. HALE, Harry Preston, Jr., 23, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

HALL, John Bentley, 78, of Pembroke, died Friday, January 24, 1997, following a long illness at his home. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born in Red Ash, Tazewell County, he was a son of the late J. B. Hall Sr. and Stella Linkous Hall. Bentley was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pembroke, a member of Castle Rock Lodge #334 A.F.&A.M. in Pembroke, and a member of the Scottish Rite and the Kazim Temple in Roanoke. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, receiving the Purple Heart for being wounded in action at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He served his community and earned his living as an independent insurance agent from his office in Pearisburg for over 30 years. A brother, Frank Andrew Hall of Castlewood, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Madeline Williams Hall; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon H. and Peter L. deFur of Richmond; two granddaughters, Erica Lee deFur of Alexandria and Kirsten Marie deFur of Richmond; two sisters, Gladys H. Allison of Bristol, Tenn., and Thelma H. Stanley of Bristol, Va.; a brother, Gus C. E. Hall of Bristol, Va.; two aunts, Mellie L. Hall and Cora L. Dickerson of Blacksburg, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 27, 1997, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church of Pembroke, with Pastor Max Brown officiating. HANCOCK, Roy Lawrence, 60, of Bland, died Saturday, January 25, 1997, in Radford Community Hospital. He was born January 29, 1936, in Radford, a son of the late Robert Cecil and Alma Cressell Hancock. He was preceded in death by h is wife, Pauline Hancock, and two brothers, Robert Louis Hancock and Edward Hancock. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Tanya Hancock of Bland; seven sisters, Mrs. Katherine Cox, Mrs. Joyce Johnson and Mrs. Peggy Treadway of High Point, N.C., Mrs. Edna Hyatt of Illinois, and Mrs. Louise McHenry, Mrs. Opal Furr and Mrs. Barbara Furr of Trinity, N.C., and three grandchildren, Ariel, Heather and Natasha Hancock. HILLYER, Hazen Glen, (``Hayes""), 89, of Roanoke County, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997, after a long illness. He was a former member of the BPOE Elks Club and the Kiwani s Club of Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Hillyer was a retired salesman, formerly with Grand Piano in Roanoke and manager of Ball Brothers in Bristol. He was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Joyce Hillyer of Roanoke County; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Carter Fitzpatrick of Roanoke County; beloved Poppie of Courtney and Fielding Fitzpatrick of Roanoke County; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norma and Lew Horner of Pontiac, Mich., and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 1 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Donald Carlton and the Rev. Bryan Oldham officiating. HIX, Sue Cox, 86, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, January 24, 1997 in Richmond, surrounded by her family. She was a daughter of the late Addison and Emily Rice Cox and was the widow of John Alfred Hix. Mrs. Hix was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church, where she served as Secretary for 25 years. She was past Matron and a charter member of Rocky Mount Chapter #141, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was presently serving as Electa and was clerk for many years of the Franklin County Baptist Association. Surviving are her daughters and a son-in-law, Betty Hix Grady, Kinston, N.C., Frances Hix and Ernie Padden, Richmond; her grandchildren, Kenneth G., Jr., and Paige Wade, Virginia Beach, John C. Wade, Kinston, N.C., Richard L. Wade, Ozark, MO., Jace M. Padden and Whitney H. Padden, both of Richmond; her great-grandchildren, McKenzie Wade, Kyle Wade, Jacob Wade; her sister and brother-in-law, Sara and William Vaughan, Lynchburg. HOTINGER, Ernestine Chittum, 85, of Lexington, died Frida y, January 24, 1997, at her residence. Born on August 16, 1911, in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late John Emmett Chittum and Luella Knick Chittum. Mrs. Hotinger was a member of Collierstown Presbyterian Church, and Virginia Retired Teachers Association, having taught in Rockbridge County Schools for 30 years. She was the widow of Mr. Clarence W. Hotinger. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Calvin Cummings of Lexington; two grandsons and wives, Larry and Teresa Cummings of Lexington and Jerry and Penny Cummings of Harrisonburg, and two great-granddaughters, Christina and Erika Cummings of Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Brad Langdon officiating. LIGHTFOOT, Treva Hylton, 92, of Greensboro, N.C., passed away Friday, January 24, 1997, in a Roanoke, Va., health care center. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Guild, Chapter 141, of Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her husba nd, William H. Lightfoot. Surviving are three sisters, Clarice Howell of Richmond, Va., Ercell Simmons of Baltimore, Md., and Sue Hylton of Norfolk, Va.; four brothers, Carmon E. Hylton of Roanoke, Virgil D. Hylton of Fort Myers, Fla., Dale Hylton of Lynhartsville, Pa., and Dr. Claude Hylton of Washington, Va., and a number of nieces and nephews. LINKOUS, Margaret Dorothy Hall, (Mrs. Gilbert F.), 95, of Austin Texas, formerly of Blacksburg, Va., died Saturday, January 25, 1997, in Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert F. Linkous, a sister, Annie J. Hall, and two brothers, Gordon and Corbin Hall. Survivors include three children, Gordon Linkous, Fredricksburg, Va., William Linkous, Lexington, Va., Dorothy Robinson, Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Pendergraft, Chapel Hill, N.C. MAILLER, David Thomas, 47, of Tucson Ariz., formerly of New Jersey, died Sunday, January 19, 1997 as a result of a cycling accident. MARTIN, Betty Lou Pardue, 62, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997, after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Salem, she was a lifetime resident of the area. She was retired from Marsteller Corporation as corporate secretary after 30 years of service. She was a member of Faith Fellowship Church of God of Prophecy, where she was music director since 1945 and was an organist for John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. Mrs. Martin was also the state music director for the Church of God of Prophecy and was clerk and treasurer for a number of years at Faith Fellowship Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert E. and Vivian Pardue. Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, Homer M. Martin; sons and daughters-in-law, K. Rae and Nicole Martin, Vinton, Daryl S. and Kimberly Martin, Roanoke; grandchildren, Whitney M. Martin, Bethany N. Martin, Tyler Wesley Marks Martin, Rachel B. PERDUE, James Marshall, 59, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997, in a local hospital. He was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church. He was retired from C&P/Bell Atlantic Telephone Company with 35 years of service, and was a former part-time employee of Woods Service Center, Inc. of Vinton. He also was a former member of Vinton First Aid Crew. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cindy P. Vaughan, and a sister, Frances Perdue Mullins. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Spangler Perdue; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Mark Fuller of Botetourt County; a son-in-law, Mitch Vaughan of Vinton; three grandchildren, Ryan M. Fuller, Kendra A. Fuller and Anna M. Vaughan; one brother, Earl Perdue of North Carolina, and two sisters, Elizabeth (``Sis"") Knowles of California and Janis (``Pete"") Hayden of Vinton. RATCLIFF, Emmett Murlyn, 61, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, Janua ry 25, 1997. He was a technician for Old Dominion Securities and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Homer and Elsie Albert Ratcliff. Survivors include his wife, Loraine Bain Ratcliff of Christiansburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Carol Ratcliff of Christiansburg, Phillip and Penny Ratcliff of Radford; three grandsons, Bryan, Dustin and Jacob Ratcliff; two stepgrandchildren and their wives, Timmy and Julie Simpkins and Dwayne and Wendy Simpkins, all of Radford; three brothers, Bobby and Eddie Ratcliff, both of Radford, and Roger Ratcliff of Dublin; two sisters, Connie Owens of Radford and Bonnie Spangler of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. RUCKER, James Samuel, Sr., 92, of Fincastle, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 25, 1997. He was a son of the late George A. and Berta M. Rucker, and also was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie A. Rucker; two sons, James S. Rucker Jr. and Frank A. Rucker; three sisters, Pauline Sprinkle, Lucille Rucker and Louise Harris, and one brother, Henry Rucker. Mr. Rucker was a lifelong member of Woodland Church, and is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Agnes R. and Clarence Prinz of Roanoke; one son and two daughters-in-law, Ralph Hampton and Jean M. Rucker of Fincastle, Audrey C. Rucker of Roanoke; one sister, Naomi Harris of Fincastle; three brothers, Cecil (``Gill"") Rucker of Roanoke, Russell (``Buster"") Rucker of Fincastle and Earl Rucker of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, J. RYDER, Cecil Gray Fletcher, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 25, 1997. She was retired from Kenrose Manufacturing. She was a member of the League of Older Americans, and member of Belmont Presbyterian Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Simmons, Franklinville, N. C., Darlene and Curtis Garman, Salem, Linda Hunnell, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sist er, Mary Fletcher Rogers, Salem; also a number of nieces and nephews. SELFE, Ralph G., 87, of Roanoke, formerly of Manakin, died Friday, January 24, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn O. Selfe; two sons, Harry Selfe and David Selfe; one daughter, Myra Glenn Johnson; one stepson, Jim Cochran; two stepdaughters, Mary Elizabeth Hamner and N ancy Ruth Simcox; three sisters, Maxie Mullins, Dixie Sutherland and Georgie Shortt; two brothers, Jack Selfe and Carter Selfe; 14 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. SMITH, James Russell, 66, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997, at his home in Marianna, Fla. Jim, known as ``Floogy"" to his classmates, was a former resident of Radford, Va., where he graduated with the Class of 1949 at Radford High School. He is survived by his wife, Delores (``Dee"") Furay Smith of Marianna; two daughters, Sherry Fowler Jones and Lisa Smith of Annapolis, Md.; one grandson, Christopher Fowler of Deland, Fla.; his mother, Erma Sue Smith of Radford, and four brothers, Darst W. SMITH, Lydia Mae, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997. She was the widow of James D. Smith. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael E. Smith. Mrs. Smith was a member of Belmont Christian Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Avon and Alfred Burton of Portsmouth; son and daughter-in-law, Rex S. and Darnell Smith of Roanoke; two grandsons, Wayne Burton of Thomasville, N.C., and Gary Smith of Roanoke; granddaughter, Dian Bumgarner of Florence, S.C., and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 27, 1997, in Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Michael Barnes officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel

UMBERGER, Philip Walter, (``Picky""), 71, of Rt. l, Box 372 (Robinson Tract Road) Pulaski, died Saturday morning, January 25, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski, Va. on August 9, 1925 and was the son of the late Brown and Ossie Umberger. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U. S. Navy. Surviving are his wife, Beulah McPeak Umberger, Pulaski; son, Wayne Umberger, Pulaski; daughter, Linda Dalton, Pulaski; two granddaughters; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Hampton Atkinson officiating and assisted by Charles McPeak. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, with Pulaski VFW Post #1184 conducting military graveside rites. Visiting will be Sunday evening from Stevens Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

WILLIAMS, Melvin A., (``Mutt""), of Roanoke, died Friday, January 24, 1997. He was retired from the Transportation Division of the U. S. Postal Service. Surviving are his wife, Jennie L. Williams; daughters, Lark Williams, Lin Edlich; sisters, Helen Brick, Marie Williams, Jean Johnson; grandson, Scott Atkins; several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation and services will be private. In lieu of food or flowers, memorials may be made to the Cave Spring Rescue Squad. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.
