HOT ROANOKE ROLLS PAST R-M

Roanoke College used torrid first-half shooting to bury Randolph-Macon early as the Maroons remained atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings with an 82-70 victory Saturday in Ashland.

The Maroons (14-1 overall, 9-0 conference) hit 76 percent (19 of 25) from the floor, including seven of eight from beyond the 3-point arc, in the opening 20 minutes. Roanoke finished shooting 65.3 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from 3-point range.

Jason Bishop, who connected on all four of his 3-point attempts and had six assists, scored 17 points to lead four Maroons in double figures. Nathan Hungate (Northside) had 11 assists and hit three of four 3-pointers to finish with 11 points. John Maher (Blacksburg) added 16 points.

Matt Meehan scored 14 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 5-5).

In other games involving Virginia teams:

VMI 62, Furman 60: Aaron Demory's tip-in with 23 seconds left was the difference in a Southern Conference victory over the Paladins and former VMI coach Joe Cantafio, breaking the Keydets' 18-game losing streak in Greenville, S.C.

VMI came from six points down in the final minutes, starting with a 3-point play and layup from Demory to make it 56-55. The Keydets (8-10, 4-2) then took the lead on two free throws by Alex Harrington.

Jason Stewart's tip-in with 1:30 left put Furman (7-10, 2-4) back up 60-59, but Demory's follow of a missed layup made the score 61-60. Darryl Faulkner made the front end of a two-shot foul with four seconds left to ice the game.

Faulkner finished with 15 points, while Maurice Spencer scored 14 and Demory 13. Stewart had 23 points for Furman.

Ferrum 85, North Carolina Wesleyan 75: Marcus Toney scored 28 points to lead the Panthers (9-6, 2-2) to a Dixie Conference victory over the Battlin' Bishops (5-7, 1-3) in Ferrum.

Toney, who hit five 3-point field goals, paced three Ferrum players in double figures. Pat Brooks, who connected on four 3-pointers, scored 17 points, and Rodney Ponzo added 15. Michael Hunter (Alleghany) led Ferrum with 12 rebounds and four assists.

James Madison 84, Old Dominion 66: Chatney Howard scored 18 of his 24 points in a runaway first half, and the Dukes (11-5, 5-2) put away the Monarchs (14-6, 5-3) with an 18-0 burst to start the second half in a Colonial Athletic Association game in Harrisonburg.

Odell Hodge had 10 points for ODU (14-6, 5-3) in his second consecutive subpar game. The former Laurel Park star has 19 points in the Monarchs' past two games after averaging 18.5 points through 18.

George Mason 70, William and Mary 67: George Redd made two free throws with 23 seconds remaining to cap a 9-0 run by the Patriots (9-8, 3-5) that produced a CAA victory over the Tribe (6-11, 3-4) in Fairfax.

Virginia Commonwealth 86, Richmond 71: Torrance Archie scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Rams (7-10, 3-5) rolled past the Spiders (6-9, 3-4) in a CAA game in Richmond.

Liberty 72, Charleston Southern 68: Marcus White made four free throws in the final 22 seconds, sealing the Flames' Big South Conference victory over the Buccaneers.

Liberty (13-8, 3-2) led by as many as 16 in the first half and throughout the second half until Brett Larrick's jumper with 32 seconds left pulled Charleston Southern (8-9, 1-4) even at 68. White then made four of six free-throw attempts to clinch it for the Flames.

Hampton 61, Morgan State 59: Al Bell hit two free throws with 32 seconds left, and the Pirates (4-12, 3-4) held on to beat the Bears (4-12, 3-4) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game in Hampton.

Emory & Henry 105, Hampden-Sydney 100: Donald Childress (William Byrd) scored 25 points and Justin Porterfield (Northside) added 15 points and eight assists as the Wasps (4-10, 4-5) surprised the Tigers (11-5, 5-5) in an ODAC game in Emory.
