RU to award transfer grants

RADFORD - Radford University's College of Business and Economics will award scholarships to five students who transfer to the university from a community college in Virginia. Five qualified students studying business administration will receive the $1,000 scholarships to assist them with tuition and fees. The scholarships are based on academic achievement and community involvement.

One student from each of the following four community colleges will receive a scholarship: New River, Wytheville, Virginia Highlands and Virginia Western. The fifth scholarship will be awarded to a student from the remaining schools in the Virginia Community College system. The scholarships are based on academic achievement and community involvement. They are funded by the annual Senior Banquet, which recognizes outstanding graduating seniors. Scholarships will be awarded for the 1997-98 school year. Oral history videos available

RADFORD - Radford University has donated a series of videotaped oral histories to the Radford Public Library. Originally aired on "Community Speaking," the four tapes feature longtime Radford residents Charlie Fretwell, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Nicholson, Maryanne Stump, Bob Wade, Robert Bruce and Lucille Austin.

Two additional tapes highlight historic Radford homes, Arnheim House and Ingleside.

Montgomery seeks board applicants

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Board of Supervisors of Montgomery County will be making appointments to the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Transportation Safety Commission. Incumbents and interested Montgomery County citizens who are registered voters and in good tax standing should submit a letter of intent and a resume to Betty S. Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073-0806, no later than Friday.

The Parks and Recreation Commission serves as an advisory board to the Parks and Recreation Department in developing leisure activities for residents of all ages in Montgomery County. It meets first Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Department. Three-year appointments are open for District F, District G and District E.

The Transportation Safety Commission is required by the state to gather input in recognizing and solving problems in highway safety. Members represent governing organizations on the local level. Meetings are held quarterly. One three-year appointment is open.

Community worship service Thursday

PULASKI - Christ Episcopal Church, 144 N. Washington Ave., will be host to an ecumenical community worship service Thursday at 7 p.m. to observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

The service, with the theme "Be Reconciled to God," will be led by the Rev. Terrie Sternberg, president of the Pulaski Ministerial Association, and will feature an ecumenical choir. Suzanne Steel, organist at First United Methodist Church, will be music leader. An offering will be taken for New RIver Community Action and the Salvation Army.

Free-clinic art benefit scheduled

BLACKSBURG - The annual art benefit for the free clinic will be held March 15 at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. More than 100 items from local artists will be auctioned to aid the agency's medical and dental programs. The clinic provides for people who cannot afford medical care.

The benefit will open with a social at 6 p.m. Bidding begins at 7:30 p.m. Music and food will be provided.
