EXPRESS GAME PUT ON ICE TILL WEDNESDAY

The Roanoke Express hockey game scheduled for tonight has been postponed because of a mechanical problem with the Roanoke Civic Center's ice refrigeration system.

The game against the Knoxville Cherokees has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A problem with a chemical component in the ice-making system forced civic center workers to remove the ice following Saturday's Roanoke-Charlotte game. The system was repaired, but ice will not be playable until Wednesday.

Fans with tickets for tonight's game may use them Wednesday. Tickets remain available at the civic center box office.

Vaught told the Bristol Herald-Courier he has resigned as head coach at Richlands because of controversy surrounding his tenure, which began in 1991. The former Patrick Henry and Lexington coach said he made the decision for the good of the community and the high school.

Vaught's 1992 team won the Group AA Division 4 championship, but the title was tainted when Richlands was placed on probation by the Virginia High School League because his players used illegal cleats in a semifinal victory over Salem. He left Patrick Henry with two games left in the 1988 season after he allegedly used a racial slur during a halftime talk to his team at a game in Newport News.
