EMORY & HENRY SHOCKS MAROONS IN ODAC THRILLER

The Emory & Henry men's basketball team may have lost some players recently, but the ones that are left are proving to be as good or better.

Sophomore forward Tyrone Hash, from Pulaski County High School, scored a career-high 30 points Wednesday and the Wasps shocked Roanoke 106-97 in Emory. It was the Maroons' first Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss and their second overall of the season.

``They lit it up,'' Maroons coach Page Moir said. ``We got them into a comfort zone and they took over.''

The Wasps (5-11 overall, 5-5 ODAC) have won three of their past four games and have averaged 105 points in the three victories. The game was punctuated by a fight with 6:13 to play that brought a few members of the crowd out on the court to break things up.

Former William Byrd standout Donald Childress scored 17 for Emory & Henry and former Narrows guard Patrick Bailey added 10. Justin Porterfield, a freshman point guard from Northside High, had six assists.

Jason Bishop led Roanoke (14-2, 9-1) with 19 points and Jon Maher (Blacksburg) added 10 points and nine rebounds. The Maroons shoot 51.6 percent from the field, but the Wasps shot 56.7 percent.

No.1 Kansas 86, No.22 Texas Tech 77: Paul Pierce scored all 16 of his points in the second half to help erase No.1 Kansas' biggest halftime deficit this season and the Jayhawks went on to a victory over the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas.

The Jayhawks (21-0, 7-0 Big 12), under seige for most of the game by Red Raiders center Tony Battie, forced Texas Tech into 10 second-half turnovers to retain their status as the country's only unbeaten Division I team.

No. 3 Kentucky 92, Florida 65: The Wildcats had a bigger lineup, better players and hardly any problems as Ron Mercer and Anthony Epps led the Wildcats to a victory in Gainesville, Fla.

No.11 Iowa State 77, Nebraska 67: Dedric Willoughby scored 21 points and the Cyclones made all but one of their free throws over the final three minutes for a victory over the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb.

No.18 Colorado 69, Kansas State 60: In Manhattan, Kan., Chauncey Billups scored 25 points, including a big 3-pointer with 2:58 to play, as the Buffaloes held off Kansas State to extend the Wildcats' losing streak to eight games and keep them winless in the Big 12.

East Carolina 78, Old Dominion 63: In Greenville, N.C., former Patrick Henry High School starTim Basham scored 19 points as East Carolina beat the Monarchs, snapping a Pirates' two-game losing streak and keeping them in a three-way tie for the Colonial Athletic Conference lead with UNC-Wilmington and James Madison.

``Lord, have mercy, she's good,'' said Roanoke coach Susan Dunagan.

No other player scored in double figures for Roanoke (13-1, 10-0 ODAC), but the game wasn't decided on the scoreboard as much as it was on the backboard. The Maroons outrebounded EMU (3-12, 3-9) 50-26.

Massachusetts 54, Virginia Tech 52: Kelly Drinka's 3-point attempt with one second left rimmed out and the Minutewomen edged the Hokies in Blacksburg. The loss was Tech's ninth in its past 10 games.
