BLANKENSHIP, Lindy Bern, (``Bunny''), 68, a resident of 4312 Etta Rd., Durham, N.C., died Tuesday afternoon at Durham Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Blankenship was born near Rocky Mount. He was employed with A & B Paving Co., and was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Shirley B. Blankenship; a daughter, Mrs. Debra Wynne of Durham; two sons, Jimmy Blankenship of Hillsborough and Doye Lee Blankenship of Durham; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church by Rev. Joe Bostic. Burial will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Blankenship Family Cemetery at Crafts Church in Glade Hill. Flowers are acceptable or those who wish may make memorial contributions for the paving of the parking lot at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.

CLAYTON, Catherine Mary Chapman, 74, died at her home in Lexington on Wednesday, January 19, 1997. Memorial services will be private. Arrangements by Williams Funeral Service, Lexington.

COCHRAN, Maynard Lee, 76, of Hillsville, passed away Monday, January 27, 1997, in Catawba Hospital, Catawba. He was born September 7, 1920 in Floyd County, son of the late Matt and Nora Moran Cochran, and was one of 13 children. He was a World War II veteran, landed on Omaha Beach on D Day and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Cochran was preceded in death by his wife, Annaleen Staples Cochran; and a son, Larry Cochran. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Markel and Gay Nell Cochran, Hillsville, Ron and Cherie Cochran, Hillsville, Connie and Laurie Cochran, Raleigh, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Cochran, Hillsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Irene McAdams, Winston-Salem, N.C., Ersley and Homer Robinette, Floyd; ten grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Dalton Hill Christian Church with Rev. James Jordan officiating. Interment will be in Dalton Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville. CROWDER, Wallace Adolph, ``Doc,'' 74, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 1997 at his home. He was retired from the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries. He is survived by his wife, Edna Wright Crowder; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and James Drummond; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 31 at the Paitsel Funeral Home Chapel, New Castle, with Dr. Ernie Johnson and Jim Morris officiating. Interment will follow in Crawford Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

GREENWOOD, Lucille V., died Wednesday, January 29, 1997 after a short illness. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a retired long time employee of Samuel Spigel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alma B. Adams. She is survived by her cousins, Virginia Moore Wiley, Jane Carol Maddox, Martha Ann Maddox Wardlaw, Hellen Caldwell, Melissa Wiley Laughlin. Interment services will be in Fair View Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday, January 31, 1997. A memorial service will be at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Friday. Dr. Philip West will officiate. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

HANSEN, Bernard J., (``Buck""), 72, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday evening, January 28, 1997, at his home. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Japan as a Combat Engineer. Mr. Hansen was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hansen; a daughter, Carol Austin, of Salem; five grandchildren, Chris Padgett, Bedford, Kelly Wright, Montvale, Lesa Keesee, Durham, N.C., Tracy Cortez, Seattle, Wash., Patrick Brown, Roanoke; several great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Arthur Towne, Southbury, Conn. Funeral services with military honors will be conducted from the graveside, Franklin Memorial Park at 1 p.m., Friday, with Pastor Eddie Crabtree officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

HUNT, Orie Samuel, 83, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 1997, in Radford Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 30, at the graveside in Sunset Cemetery conducted by Rev. Clarence G. Dishman. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by Virginia May Lodge #38 AF & AM. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg.

JANSONS, Emilija Goldmans, 89, of Rt. 3, Bedford, died Thursday, January 29, 1997 at her residence. She was born in Riga, Latvia on October 5, 1907, a daughter of the late Janis Goldmans and Agnes Bauman Goldmans. She is survived by three daughters, Arija Ekstrom, Bedford, Diana Kuskevic, Hamilton, Ontario, Regina Jansons, Huntington Beach, CA.; one sister, Zelma Baskers, Kalamazoo, MI.; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. A service will be held at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home on Friday at 5 p.m., with Pastor Gary K. Scheidt officiating. The family is receiving friends following the service at 6 p.m. at their residence, Rt. 3 Box 70, Bedford. Arrangements by Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.

JARRETT, Dorothy Ferguson, 82, of Edinburg Square, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 29, 1997. Mrs. Jarrett was a member of Penn Forest Wesleyan Church, was once active with the first volunteer fire department on Williamson Road, and was retired from Fitzpatrick's Delivery Service. She was the widow of William (Ben) Jarrett, and is survived by her daughters and sons-in -law, Fay (Jackie) and Russell Dillon, Salem, Carol LaPradd, Vinton, Bennie and Bill Fralin, Roanoke, Nellie Arrington, Vinton, Dianne Byrd and Allan Gonzalez, Roanoke; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Louise Bohn, Mary Bryant, both of Roanoke; former sons-in-law, Paul L. LaPradd, Jr., Roanoke, Fred Arrington, South Boston; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel Friday, January 31, 1997, 3 p.m., with the Rev. Stephen Martin officiating. Interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

JOHNSON, Mary Evelyn Jones, 68, of Roanoke passed away Monday, January 27, 1997. She is survived by her husband, James Ernest Johnson; two sons, Shawn M. Johnson and Brian K. Johnson both of Roanoke; four daughters, Sandra L. Johnson of Washington D.C., Jane J. (Michael) Bundick, Sherri V. (Jackie) Journiette, and Janeen C. Johnson all of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren, Lisa, Jay, Neal, Karen, Wanda, Davina, Mark, Ronda, Ashleigh, LaShawnia, Alexis, Brittani and Chris; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 31, 1997 at the Sweet Union Baptist Church of Roanoke. The Rev. Dr. E. T. Burton will officiate. LAWHORN, Blanche Odell St.Clair Wheeler, 85, of Rt. 1, Vinton, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 1997. She was predeceased by her husbands, Nelson C. Lawhorn and Ralph Wheeler. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris W. and W. E. Donald, Rt. 1, Vinton, Nancy L. and Buford Lawhorn, Rt. 1, Vinton ; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy R. and Geraldine Wheeler, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Gail Feury, Danny Fralin, Selina Spradlin; four great-grandchildren, Shonna Wheeler, Donnie Randal Evans, Andy Fralin, and Jason Spradlin; one great-great-grandson, Trai Lee Wheeler; one sister, Rowena Brown, Goodview. MORTON, Walt, age 71 of Roanoke passed awa y Tuesday, January 28, 1997 in a Roanoke Hospital. He was retired after 30 years of service from The Roanoke Times. Mr. Morton was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Smith Morton; a son, James Steve Morton. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Walton H. Morton, Jr. and Leth D. Morton, USAF; two daughters, Nancy M. Stover and husband Jimmy Stover, Susan G. Morton all of Roanoke; a stepson, David W. Jones, Hartford, Conn.; six grandchildren, Jimmy Stover and his wife Michele Stover, John Stover, April Stover, Angela Morton, Jessica Morton and Kristen Morton; four great-grandchildren, Charles Slusser, Autumn Slusser, Kayla Bennett and Brandon Stover; two brothers, George Morton, Elkton, William L. PAYNE, Harris Lee Sr., 83, of Floyd, formerly of Christiansburg, died Monday, January 27, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday from Main Street Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. William E. Hungate. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad or to the Salvation Army. RENICK, John Stafford, 84, of Callaway, died Tuesday, January 28, 1997 in the local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jamison Renick. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Geraldine Renick, Callaway, John S., Jr. and Beverly Renick, Salem; two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnne and James Pagans, Roanoke, Lois and Clay Rakes, Ferrum; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Guerrant, Callaway; one brother, William Lee Renick, Nashville, Tenn.; special friends, Ronnie and Barbara Turner. Funeral services will be conducted from Piedmont Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. C. Richard Slider and the Rev. Eugene Lawson officiating. RIGGINS, Mary Victoria Hodge, 88, of Draper, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 1997. Funeral Friday 2 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

ROACH, Frank Daniel, 65, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Tuesday, January 28, 1997. He formerly resided in Christiansburg, Va. He retired from the U.S. Marshall Service in June of1995 where he served as a Courtroom Security Officer. He was a former Chief of Police with the Blacksburg Police Department where he served for19 years. He was a member of the Blacksburg Christian Church and was a volunteer in the Blacksburg Rescue Squad and Fire Department. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was a Navy Veteran. He was preceded in death by his son, R. Lynn Roach. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Plymale Roach, a daughter and son-in law Melissa and Shawn Campman of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Roach of Roanoke; three granddaughters, Michelle and Meredith Roach, of Roanoke, Katy Campman of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters and brother-in-laws, Ruby and Ray Elliott of Brunswick, Ga; Martha and Dean West of Richmond, Va; a mother in law, Addie Plymale of Salem. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 31, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey Chapel in Salem, with the Dr. Kirk Lawton, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and the Rev. Johnny Loughridge of Blacksburg Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
