WECKSTEIN NEW CHIEF OF 23RD CIRCUIT

Circuit Judge Clifford Weckstein has been elected chief judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit, which includes Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem.

Weckstein was elected to the post at a recent meeting of the circuit's six judges. He succeeds Roy Willett, who held the position since 1989.

The duties of a chief judge include appointing substitute judges and deciding where they will hear cases within the circuit; coordinating courtroom security measures with sheriffs' offices; serving as spokesman for the judges when necessary; and presiding over ceremonies such as swearing in new judges.

Weckstein, who was elected to a two-year term as chief judge, has been a circuit judge since 1987 and presides primarily in Roanoke. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and graduated from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1974.

He is a member of the boards of governors of the Criminal Law Section of the Virginia State Bar, the state's Judicial Sentencing Guidelines Committee, the bar's Professionalism Course and other professional groups.
