ASBERRY, Macy Frances Schoonover, 67, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997 in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Paula Regina Asberry. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Wayne Karnes, Rhode Island, Ricky Allen and Debbie Karnes, Atlanta, Ga., Eric Dean and Penny Karnes, Roanoke; four daughters and son-in-law, Charlotte Mays, Roanoke, Brenda Starr Karnes, Virginia Beach, Rhonda Steele Baker and John Blair Baker, Roanoke, Stephanie Gail Asberry, Roanoke; one brother, Ray Schoonover, Dublin; four sisters, Margaret Petro, Nellie Schoonover, both of Blairsville, Pa., Bertha Overstreet, Salem, Mrs. Calvin (Beatrice) Scott, Hardy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; special grandchild, Audrey M. BOGGS, James P., (``Jack""), 89, of Salem, died at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Va. on Wednesday, March 5, 1997. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice T. Boggs and is survived by his wife, Florence M. Boggs; his son and daughter-in-law, Phillip O. and Geneva S. Boggs; stepdaughter, Joyce Coleman; granddaughters, Robin and Vicki Boggs; grandson and wife, Cary and Dana Boggs; great-grandchildren, Melinda and Morgan Boggs. BOUSMAN, Denton Curtis, 78, of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997. Mr. Bousman w as a retired Road Engineer with the Norfolk & Western Railroad. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Mae Craighead, Rocky Mount, Mrs. Maxine Muse, New Brunswick, N.J.; two stepsons, David and Everett Anderson, Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, Mrs. Virginia Muse, Mrs. Daffy Muse, both of Rocky Mount, Mrs. Gay Campbell, Mrs. Kate Campbell and Mrs. Betty Cobbs, all of Penhook; one brother, Joseph (Joe) Campbell, Henry Co.; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. CASE, Grace Elizabeth, of Roanoke went home to be with our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 5, 1997. Mrs. Case was a precious and beloved wife and mother. She will b e sorely missed in person by her family and many friends, but who will continuously be with us in spirit. She is survived by her husband, Marvin A. Case; one son, Arthur M. CRIST , John David, 76, of Luray, died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at his residence. He was born in Lexington, Va., July 20, 1920 to the late Claude W. Crist and Clara Cupp Crist. He was employed as a Soil Conservationist with the Dept. of Agriculture and was an Army veteran. Mr. Crist was a member of the Luray Lions Club for over 51 years and a Mason with Lafayett Lodge for 50 years, as well as Corp. of Cadets-VPI, and a 1944 graduate of Va. Tech. He was married to Anne Belle Finley Crist on September 23, 1943. He was preceded in death by a daughter and two sisters. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, John David Crist, Jr., Blacksburg, Daniel Greenlee Crist, Harrisonburg, Robert Lewis Crist, Charlottesville; one daughter, Jeanne Crist Kibler, Stanardsville; 11 grandsons; and a brother, Claude W. Crist, Jr. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bradley Funeral Home Chapel in Luray, Va., with the Rev. David W. Lord officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. CROSS, Linda Kaye Patton, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born on August 24, 1946 to the late Huber Rankin Patton Jr. and Johnnie Joel Mull Patton in Asheville, N.C. Also preceding in death are a son, Joshua Len Cross; and a sister, Betty Patton Murray. She was very active in several church and high school activities. Survivors include her husband, Landrum L. ``Lanny'' Cross; two sons, L. HAYNES, Harry W. Jr., 71, a long time resident of Roanoke and Boones Mill, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 5, 1997. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother. Mr. Haynes was a long time and active member of Air Lee Court Baptist Church, serving his church in various capacities throughout the years. He was an active member of Mending Hearts of Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Haynes proudly served in the 303rd Bombadier Group of the U. S. Air Force during World War II, having survived being shot down over Germany and becoming a P.O.W. Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years, Betty Grant Haynes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda H. and Wayne Carter, Disputanta, Va., Bonnie H. and Buddy Hannah, Durham, N. C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, H. Richard and Jean N. Haynes, Augusta, S. C., David A. and Susan Haynes, Roanoke; four granddaughters, Tammy Hannah, Jennifer Haynes, Kathryn Haynes and Meredith Haynes; a brother and his wife, C. Winston Haynes and Betty Haynes, Roanoke; and an aunt, Mrs. Mary Kawas, Miami, Fla. HUFFMAN, Winifred Basham, 75, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, at Shenandoah Health Care Center in Buena Vista. She was born March 28, 1921 in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Charles Basham and Florence Kingery Basham. She was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Huffman. She is survived by a son, Wayne L. Huffman Sr. of Buena Vista; a special friend, Maxine Spangler; a granddaughter, Kery Huffman of Alameda, Calif.; grandson, Wayne L. Huffman Jr. of Buena Vista; brother, David Basham of Troutville; sister, Mary Todt of Bristol; and special friends, Richard Breeden and Crystal Spangler. LANDAU, Mark S., 43, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 1997 as a result of an automobile accident. He was a graduate of Cave Spring High School and attended Virginia Western and Virginia Tech. Mark was a long time employee of Valley Machine. He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane Landau. Surviving are his wife, Annette Guthrie Landau, step daughter, Jennifer Croft, father Dr. William Landau all of Roanoke. NAFF, Herman Christian, 80, of Roanoke died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at his home. He was a longtime member of and a life Deacon at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren where he served as past Chairman of the Board, Sunday S chool Superintendent, and a Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Naff was President of the Medley Court League. During World War II he served in the U. S. Army. Mr. Naff retired as a Supervisor of Mail and Tele Communications from the V. A. Medical Center, Salem. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mabel Ramsey Naff; and a brother, John W. Naff, Roanoke. Memorials may be made to Peters Creek Church of the Brethren or The Good Samaritan Hospice. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 1997 from Peters Creek Church of The Brethren. NELSON, Audrey Catherine Beeghly, (``Kitty''), 57, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at her residence. She was born April 10, 1939, and was preceded in death by her mother, Nannie D. Beeghly and a granddaughter, Brittany. Kitty was a registered nurse and a faithful servant of the Lord. Surviving are her husband, Terry Nelson; one son, John Carr, Rocky Mount; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lee Anne and Jamie Hartberger, Rocky Mount, Christina and Richard Taylor, Boones Mill; four grandchildren, Jamie Aaron, Christopher, Julia, and Brianna; her father, Marvin Beeghly, Rocky Mount; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Bobby) and Ada Beeghly, Henry; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive; a special friend, Sue Joyce, and so many others; a special thanks to Gwen Stubbs and Darlene Law. PLUNKETT, Frances Vivian Kash, 75, quietly slipped away early Thursday morning, March 6, at her daughter's residence in Roanoke. After her husband's recent death, Colonel Hubbard Thomas Plunkett Jr. on February 17, she could no longer find happiness without her ``Tommy'' of 54 years. The love they shared was truly wonderful, powerful, and deeply spiritual. Throughout their union, she was his anchor and support, with a quick smile and a way of making anyone feel welcome and comfortable in any situation. She adapted readily to ``whatever happened'' and would modify her life to any change that appeared. Many times the Colonel would bring home someone ``new to the area'' and she would welcome them and make them feel at home until they could be settled. Her girlish charm and wit was always present. All who knew her could count on her to give of herself for their comfort and to be a true friend. She was a true example of the warm, witty, charming and elegant Southern Lady. She is survived by her twin daughters Lynn Nilsson of Roanoke and Gay Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas and their husbands; three granddaughters Heather Nilsson, Molly Nilsson, and Kathryn Jensen; one grandson Robert Jensen; three sisters, Eleanor Evans of Con cord, Virginia Snyder of Mt Jackson, and Margaret Wlodarski of Huntsville, Ala. Born June 30, 1926 in Buena Vista, he was the son of Lacy E. and Mary Elizabeth Argenbright Reid. He was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, and retired from Burlington Industries. Funeral services were held at Duke Memorial Baptist Church and burial followed in the church cemetery. She was a native of Nash County but moved to Franklin County and married Ernest J. Wheless who predeceased her. She was a c harter member of Duke Memorial Baptist Church and gave many years of devoted service serving as a deacon, teacher, and choir member. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Annie Wheless Dean, Frederick, Md.; son, Dr. James E. Wheless Sr., Roanoke; a twin sister, Mrs. Maybelle M. WHITE, Lawrence R., 32, of Blacksburg, and formerly of Blackstone, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, in a Blacksburg Hospital. He was a star football player at Fork Union Military Academy and Va. Tech. He is survived by his wife, Tanjia White; one daughter, Shanice White; parents, Baxter and Mary White of Blackstone; one sister, Brenda White of Greensboro, N.C.; and a host of devoted other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from Shil oh Baptist Church, Blackstone, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. WORD, Jane Ryan, 84, of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 6, 1997 in a Roanoke hospital. She was the widow of Kenneth Ralph Word. Survivors include one daughter, Lynn Word Via, Roanoke; two granddaughters, Dr. Owen Hurt Weaver, Dallas, Texas and Claire Hurt Sullivan, Greensboro, N.C.
