CANA MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTING TO MURDER A CARROLL COUNTY DEPUTY

A 35-year-old Cana man has been charged with attempted murder of a Carroll County law enforcement officer who was answering a call in this area of the county Sunday afternoon.

Carl Randall Sawyers of Cana also is charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a felony, and resisting arrest.

Sheriff Warren Manning said Deputy Bobby Lyons had responded shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday with members of the Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad to a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Manning said a man fired a shot in the direction of Lyons, who was in a marked police car.

Lyons called for assistance. Sawyers was arrested by Manning along with other members of the Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police. He was being held without bond Monday.
