Veterans Administration changes to be discussed

FAIRLAWN - All veterans are invited to a special meeting Monday in which William T. Harry, a claims representative with the Veterans Administration, will talk about changes, updates and forms at the VA.

The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the OCAW Hall on Peppers Ferry Road in Fairlawn. It is sponsored by chapter 138 of the Vietnam Veterans and OCAW Veterans.

For information, call Tom Parsons at 633-1675 or Bobby Ward at 980-4306.

Water testing information available

FLOYD - In accordance with a federal program to minimize lead levels in drinking water by January 1, 2002, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Floyd County Public Service Authority advise residents to have their drinking water tested.

Testing the water to determine if it contains excessive concentrations of lead is essential because lead cannot be seen, tasted or smelled.

Call the Floyd County Public Service Authority at 745-4444 for information about the local waterworks and for a list of certified local laboratories which test water quality.

Lions Club forming in Shawsville

SHAWSVILLE - Residents interested in community service are invited to attend an organizational meeting for the Shawsville Lions Club. Discussions at the meeting will include information about the Lions Club as well as what is involved in starting the new Shawsville club.

The Lions Club focuses primarily on sight conservation, but also contributes to other areas of the community through hearing conservation, leadership development and drug awareness programs. Shawsville's club will be sponsored by the Christiansburg Lions Club, founded in 1941. Other area Lions Clubs include Blacksburg, Radford, Floyd, Dublin, Pembroke, Rich Creek, Pearisburg and Narrows.

The meeting will be held at Hale's Restaurant on Route 460 in Shawsville at 7:30 p.m., Thursday.
