COUNTY STUDENT TO LEAD STATE JUNIOR BETA CLUB

Brianna Kurtz, daughter of Warren and Donna Kurtz of Roanoke County, was elected state president of the Junior Beta Club at the recent Virginia State Junior Beta Convention in Hampton.

"My duties are basically presiding over next year's convention and helping out with that," said Kurtz of her new post.

The Junior Beta Club is an honor society whose members work on community service projects. Locally, the Hidden Valley chapter has worked with residents at South Roanoke Nursing Home, helped with elementary school carnivals and volunteered with Festival in the Park.

Also at the convention, members participated in competitions based on the event's theme, "Unity Through Diversity." Hidden Valley students Erin Ogilvie and Dawn Williams won a first place trophy in photography. Patrick Fitzgibbon won first-place for his lyrics in the Songfest competition. Second-place winners were Amanda Prettyman, spelling, and Joanna Colosimo, scrapbook.

We the jury|

Hidden Valley Junior High School students got a taste of the criminal justice system March 18 at a series of mock trials sponsored by the school's PTA and the Roanoke Valley Young Lawyers Conference. Judge Jacqueline Talevi presided; attorneys Charles Cornelison, Tom Leggette, John Weber and William Terry argued for the defense and prosecution.

Students Heather Bales, Neil Stover and Robbie Lalka posed as defendants in cases of petty larceny, possession of marijuana on school grounds and reckless driving. Kristen Via, student, and Principal Dave Blevins were called as witnesses. Also participating were police officers Mike Dull and Richard Finney.

Winner in the arts|

Marina Zelikovich, a Patrick Henry High School ninth-grader, placed third in the 15th annual Young Artists' Awards Competition March 2 at Hollins College. Zelikovich, daughter of Boris and Galina Zelikovich, performed Oggenski's "Polynaise" on violin. She won $100 for her efforts.

Bluegrass in Botetourt|

Linda Barker and Appalachian Trail, a five-piece bluegrass band from Bristol, will play two 45-minute sets at the Lord Botetourt High School Athletic Department's bluegrass concert Saturday, 7-10 p.m., at the school.

Other musical guests are The Craig County Boys, also a five-piece, and Billy Edwards and Harvey Mays, who play bluegrass gospel.

Money raised at the show will benefit the school's baseball program.

Tickets are $7 in advance, and $8 at the door. For advance tickets, call the school, 992-1261, or Alvin Jayne, 362-9583.
