ARTWORKS ARE PART OF SERVICE

Ever experimented with watercolors? Maybe you tried the "wet-on-wet" approach, putting down light and dark colors onto a wet surface. "I got my personal ideas and fears out of the way and was surprised to see the flower forming itself on the paper," Alwyn Moss, a local artist, described her early experience in a statement about her painting entitled "Forming."

Moss and more than 20 other painters, sculptors and poets have contributed their works to the third annual Gallery of Sacred Art. The art display will be an integral part of the 11 a.m. Easter service at Glade Baptist Church, 1600 Glade Road, Blacksburg. The unique service will incorporate music and visual arts with the worship theme of "A Metamorphosis," tying together images related to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ - rebirth, transformation, hope and new growth.

The Rev. Kelly Sisson wanted to use some of the traditionally famous works of art for the first gallery three years ago, but found there were local artists who were combining their creativity with religion. Believing that "all are worship leaders, all are participants," Sisson has since then included works that show a wide variety of talents, from professional on down to beginner status.

The response has been favorable from the congregation and the community. Sisson and the gallery coordinator, artist Nadine Allen, anticipate a perpetual gallery at the church. They have invited artists to submit works for three more seasons in this year: "Art in Nature," "People of the Valley, Places in the Mountains," and, for Advent/Christmas/Hanukkah, "Encountering Angels."

Gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., or by appointment by calling 552-3394.

Glade Baptist Church, a member of The Alliance of Baptists, will celebrate its 23rd anniversary the weekend of May 3 and 4. Music and Gallery art also will be incorporated into the Sunday, May 4 service.
