RICHMOND HIRES BEILEIN

The University of Richmond named John Beilein as its new men's basketball coach Friday.

Beilein comes to the Spiders from Canisius College, where he amassed an 86-62 record in five season. Under his direction, the Golden Griffins made three consecutive postseason appearances, including a berth in the 1996 NCAA Tournament. His 1995 squad reached the semifinals of the NIT before falling to eventual champion Virginia Tech.

Beilein succeeds Bill Dooley, whose contract was not renewed.

In other college basketball news:

Indiana State: Royce Waltman was hired as coach at Indiana State, a day after Radford coach Ron Bradley withdrew his name from consideration.

Waltman's University of Indianapolis team finished the season ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II. He succeeds Sherman Dillard, who resigned last week to take the coaching job at his alma mater, James Madison.

Indiana State has not had a winning season since the year after Larry Bird led the Sycamores to the nation's No. 1 ranking and an NCAA runner-up finish in 1979. Dillard was 29-52 in three seasons.

Rutgers: Bill Herrion of Drexel turned down the job as basketball coach at Rutgers, less than 24 hours after being offered the position.

The withdrawal came as a major surprise since Herrion seemed to be a lock for the job after Tom Penders decided to remain as head coach at Texas earlier this week.
