TECH MAY LOSE MEN'S ASSISTANT

Chris Ferguson, an assistant men's basketball coach at Virginia Tech for the past six seasons, has been offered a position on the staff of new Tennessee coach Jerry Green.

Ferguson confirmed Monday that he will visit Knoxville, Tenn., today and will make a decision by Wednesday. Ferguson previously served under Green for one year at North Carolina-Asheville.

Green has been at Oregon since 1991, when he was interviewed by Tech for its head-coaching position, which went to Bill Foster.

Tech women fall to ODU

Catherine Augustyn's hat trick wasn't enough for Virginia Tech against Old Dominion. The Monarchs had two hat tricks and routed the Hokies 16-6 in Norfolk.

Scoring three goals apiece for No.14 ODU (5-5) were Carly Brown and Alison Brown. ODU jumped to a 9-4 halftime and outshot Tech 23-12.

Tech's other goals were scored by Suzy Funston, Amy Mantooth and Dawn Will.

Star City Classic: Radford University and VMI will renew their lacrosse rivalry Saturday night in the Star City Classic at River's Edge at 7:30.

VMI (1-7) has a nine-match winning streak against Radford (3-6). Four of VMI's losses this season have come against top 30 teams.

VMI beat Radford 17-15 last year at Dedmon Center Stadium.

Ferrum loses slugfest

Ferrum's four-run eighth inning wasn't enough to overcome North Carolina Wesleyan's six-run eighth in a battle of Dixie Conference powers. Wesleyan, which also had a six-run fourth, beat the Panthers 14-13 at Adams Field.

David Capobiano's five hits and Blake Barry's four hits led Wesleyan (23-4, 9-1), which benefited from six Ferrum errors to score seven unearned runs.

Riley Hodges (Franklin County) drove in four runs and was 3-for-6, and Pat Daly had three RBI to lead Ferrum (22-5, 7-3).

Ferrum starter Ben Brown allowed 16 hits and nine runs, only three of which were earned, in seven innings. Kevin Mabe (2-1) allowed five runs (four earned) in one inning to take the loss.

The Panthers are ranked 17th nationally in the Division III poll, released Monday. Wesleyan is third.
