Murderer scheduled for execution tonight

RICHMOND- Douglas MacArthur Buchanan Jr., sentenced to die for killing his father, stepmother and two stepbrothers, will be executed tonight unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes.

Buchanan, 29, was convicted of using a rifle, a pistol and a knife to kill his family in their Amherst County home after years of mistreatment.

Buchanan never denied the killings. An expert witness testified he suffered from an emotionally brutal upbringing.

In an appeal to the Supreme Court, Buchanan's lawyers contend that the trial judge should have allowed more testimony about Buchanan's childhood.

Campbell County gunman kills parents and himself

LYNCHBURG - After a nightlong argument with his parents, a Campbell County man killed his mother and father and then used the gun to kill himself Monday, the sheriff said.

The man's 21-year-old sister escaped about 6 a.m. when the shooting started and called police from a neighbor's house.

Barry Wayne Bohannon, 24, had been treated for psychological problems, Sheriff Robert Maxey said.

The couple appeared to be trying to get away from the house when they were gunned down, the sheriff said. Bohannon shot Joe Leonard Bohannon Jr., 52, just inside the basement door that led to the yard, and he shot Hazel Bohannon, 52, on the front steps. Bohannon then turned the gun on himself , Maxey said.
