TWO STUDENTS GET A CLOSE LOOK AT THE ART WORLD

Ingrid Moldenhauer, a senior at Glenvar High School, and Alysia Strickland, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, attended "Three Days in March," a weekend residency program hosted by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond March 19-21.

The students applied for the program through the Art Museum of Western Virginia. The program, which included workshops, tours, gallery visits and art exercises, revolved around the theme "Seeing is Believing."

Janet Wimmer, an art teacher at Roanoke Valley Christian Schools, also participated in the program.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for kids in Virginia to meet artists, view exhibits and find out what's going on in the art world," said Wimmer, who has already used the polaroid transfer and fabricated photograph techniques she learned in her high school art foundations class. "We had lots of ideas by the time we left."

Science fair at VWCC|

Seventy-five students from five school districts will strut their scientific stuff Saturday at the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair in the Humanities Building of Virginia Western Community College.

The students, who have already won at the district or school levels, are competing in 12 categories for local college scholarships, cash prizes, savings bonds and calculators.

The public may view the exhibits during the open house, 1-2:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in the auditorium at 2:30.

The two top students, grand award winners, will qualify for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Ky., in May.

It's that time again|

The Lord Botetourt Parent Teacher Student Association and After Prom Party Committee will sponsor the fourth annual Cavalier Cow Pie Contest Saturday at the high school football field. A cow will take to the field at 11 a.m. Whoever owns the deed to the spots where her first three cow pies land wins $1,000, $250 or $100.

Deeds are $5 each. Money raised will support the school's after-prom party. You don't need to be present to win. Call Betty Painter, 992-2580; Doris Mattox, 992-3088; or see Kim Bramblett at the school to purchase deeds.

Balloon rides and more|

The Oak Grove Elementary School Parent Teacher Association will hold its Fiesta Oak Grove Spring Festival Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the school, 5005 Grandin Road Extension S.W. Activities include 75-cent hot-air balloon rides and a moonwalk. Treats are available too - funnel cakes, nachos, barbecue and soft drinks. Call 966-7171 for more information.
