NAMES ON CAMPUS

The following includes information about area residents' work- and school-related accomplishments at local colleges and universities.

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Angela M. Carr represented New River Community College at Community College Day in February. She had the opportunity to visit local legislators and tour the General Assembly building. Carr was joined by students from Virginia's 23 other community colleges. Carr was accompanied by New River President Ed Barnes; director of institutional advancement, Mark Rowh; and public relations specialist, Joyce Taylor.

David E. Mann and Patricia L. Norris have been named to the Virginia Community College System's All-Virginia Academic team. Mann and Norris are students at New River Community College and are among 62 other Virginia students representing community colleges. The academic team is part of Phi Theta Kappa's state academic teams. Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society for two-year colleges.

Mir S. Shirvani, an instructor at New River, will participate in a 10-week summer program to provide on-site research support to the NASA Langley Research and Technology Operations Group and the Fabrication Division. He is one of three Virginia community college faculty members to participate. The program is funded by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY

Emily Wilkinson Stallings of Christiansburg was recently selected Leader of the Year for Province III of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. The Province III includes 27 college and university chapters. She now is one of 13 nominees for Leader of the Year at the national level.

Stallings is a graduate student at Radford University. She will receive her master's degree in corporate and professional communication in May. She teaches communication courses part time at Radford and Virginia Tech. She also works as a teller at the First National Bank of Christiansburg.

Several Radford University nursing majors from the New River Valley have been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, an international nursing honor society. The students are senior Pamela Horan of Christiansburg and graduate student Deborah Burchard of Blacksburg. Shirley Williams of Blacksburg, a community nurse leader, was also inducted.

VIRGINIA TECH

Leonard Peters of Blacksburg has been awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering. Peters received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering all from Pitt. Peters is vice provost for research and dean of the graduate school at Virginia Tech.

Scott Geller has received a $50,000 grant from The Travelers Insurance Co. to "get the word out about vehicle safety." Travelers is interested in Geller's behavior-based approach to preventing vehicle crashes and workplace injuries. Geller has done extensive work toward improving the health and safety of corporate employees. Geller is a professor of psychology and director of the Center for Applied Behavior Systems.

Joseph P. Fontenot received the 1997 Martin F. Strate "Industry Service" Award from the Virginia Cattlemen's Association. The award recognizes Fontenot's commitment to the cattle industry in Virginia. He is recognized as "the father of poultry litter feeding." Fontenot has been a professor and researcher at Virginia Tech since 1956.

David Alexander has received a $59,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fulbright-Hays Program to enhance Chinese curricula at three Virginia public schools. Alexander is chair of Virginia Tech's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Thomas Caceci has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to help develop distance learning opportunities in the Indian higher education system. Thomas is an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Histopathology. He will spend three months in early 1998 at Mangalore University, located on India's southwestern coast.
