Coal mining day is Saturday in McCoy

BLACKSBURG - The Coal Mining Heritage Association of Montgomery County is holding its annual Coal Miners Day celebration Saturday at McCoy Community Park.

The event features music, crafts, demonstrations and refreshments beginning at 10 a.m. A memorial ceremony will be held at 1 p.m.

The McCoy Ruritan Club will serve a benefit breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

In case of rain, the event will be held April 26.

The Coal Mining Heritage Association was formed in the community 1994 to recognize and preserve the legacy of coal-mining, which was the largest industry in Montgomery County during the first four decades of the century.

Student artists display their works

WYTHEVILLE - The 1997 Wytheville Community College Arts Fair will open to the public April 23 on the campus.

The annual event will show more than 500 entries in oil-, acrylic- and water-color painting, mixed media, sculpture, crafts, photography and drawing.

Work by elementary- and high-school students will be displayed in Grayson and Bland halls. It will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 23, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 24, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25.

Carved wood works at Art Place

CHILHOWIE - The works of woodcarver Gene Glenn of Atkins are being shown at The Art Place in Chilhowie during April.

Glenn started carving models from soap as a child. Later he carved fish, birds and small characters and progressed to large eagles, Indians and other subjects in such hardwoods as cherry, walnut, maple and mahogany.

Edna Love of Pulaski, who created The Art Place in Chilhowie, is expanding it to include studio space upstairs by the end of April.

Pulaski appears again in regional magazine

PULASKI - A photograph of Pulaski's historic courthouse is included in the current issue of Southern Inns and Bed & Breakfasts, a nationally distributed travel magazine covering the Carolinas and Virginia.
