TECH DEFENSE DOMINATES IN SCRIMMAGE

An unheralded redshirt sophomore continued to bull his way toward one of Virginia Tech's vacant starting jobs at defensive end Saturday.

Corey Moore, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound transfer who sat out the past fall after coming to Tech from Holmes (Miss.) Community College, had his second consecutive impressive outing with seven quarterback sacks and 10 tackles in the Hokies' controlled scrimmage.

Tech's defense registered 13 sacks and surrendered one touchdown. Tackle Kerwin Hairston had two sacks and nine total tackles, including a solo effort that resulted in a safety. Sophomore end Chris Cyrus added four sacks.

Quarterback Al Clark completed six of 14 passes for 74 yards. Flanker Brian Remley had four catches for 39 yards, and Clemson transfer Lamont Pegues led the Hokies with eight carries for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Tech concludes its spring practice at 2 p.m. April 19 with the annual Maroon-White game at Lane Stadium.
