TODAY'S WINNERS HEADING TO STATE SOFTBALL TOURNEY

{LEAD} Today's Eastern Region softball tournament semifinals carry more weight than the championship game on Friday because both finalists automatically qualify for the state tournament. Both losers go home.

Action starts at 2 p.m. on at Princess Anne High School when Western Branch takes on Bayside.

{REST} Salem meets Great Bridge at 4 p.m.

The winners vie at 3 p.m. on Friday at the same site to determine seedings for the state meet. The victor will be host to the Central Region runner-up on Friday, June 10. The loser will travel to Richmond to play the Central champion on the same day.

The region semifinals matches the 1-2 finishers in the Beach and Southeastern District. Western Branch, the regular-season champion in the Southeastern, is the defending region titlist.

Bayside vs. W. Branch\ Time: 2 p.m.

Records: Bayside (19-4); Western Branch (18-4)

Pitchers: Amy Hooks, Bayside (18-3); Nicole Belote, Western Branch (11-2)

Analysis: The winner could likely will be the better team in moving a runner around with a stolen base and a squeeze bunt or two. The opposing pitchers rarely walk batters.

Excellent base running is one of the main offensive strengths of each team. The Marlins swiped 60 bases in regular-season play. The Bruins stole 107 and have successfully executed 23 sacrifice bunts.

Great Bridge vs. Salem\ Time: 4 p.m.

Records: Great Bridge (15-6-1); Salem (20-3)

Pitchers: Stacey Adamson, Great Bridge (14-5-1); Bronwyn Blair, Salem (17-3)

Analysis: Both teams are capable of playing for a single run when it's needed but each is blessed with solid hitting throughout the lineup. Salem has more long ball hitters and designated hitter Kelly Bradley has blasted a double, two triples and a home run in the last two outings for the Sun Devils. by CNB
