A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE RESORT

{LEAD} BEFORE THE SUMMER SUN peeps over the eastern horizon, the beach is stirring.

Joggers pound the Boardwalk, a few sleeping transients lay curled in blankets near the bulkhead, the city's beach cleaners - huge machines that resemble rolling flour sifters - scour the sand for debris, then smooth it to a velvety finish for sun bathers later in the day.

{REST} As the sun moves higher, more joggers appear. They are joined by pairs of arm-pumping strollers and somber bicyclists. Waitresses at Boardwalk cafes are resetting tables for the breakfast crowd. A disheveled tourist walks out onto a motel balcony in his skivvies, scratches and yawns.

It is the beginning of another day at the Beach. It promises to be bright, hot and muggy, just the way beachgoers like it.

That's the way it was Monday, June 20, and this is a look at life that day on the resort oceanfront from morning to dusk:
