INTRODUCING WILLIAMSBURG FLATWARE

SCALLOPS ON YOUR plate are delicious, but scallops on your fork are Early American.

Colonial Williamsburg introduces its first flatware pattern this month with ``Royal Shell,'' produced by Kirk Stieff for the Williamsburg Reproductions Program.

The program, which began in 1936, lets consumers purchase historically accurate copies of Early American furniture, wall coverings and other home items. Royal Shell is a design copied from a set of mid-18th century sterling silver in the Colonial Williamsburg collections.

Each place setting includes knife, fork, salad fork, teaspoon and place spoon and sells for $76. A gravy ladle, tablespoon, cold meat fork, sugar spoon and butter knife are also available.

Royal Shell flatware can be purchased at the two Craft House locations in Colonial Williamsburg, at approved Williamsburg Shops and fine housewares stores. Or call (800) 446-9240. Meat-handling tips

Beginning this week the Department of Agriculture requires all ground meat and poultry to be labeled with preparation and handling instructions. It's all part of a USDA move to prevent the spread of food-borne illness

Here's a few tips for handling raw meat, from Lessie Scurry of Cox News Service:

Keep meat refrigerated or frozen. Thaw in refrigerator or microwave.

Keep raw meat and poultry separate from other foods; wash the work area, utensils and your hands with warm, soapy water.

Cook the meat until the juices run clear.

Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Refrigerate leftovers immediately or throw them away. Food shouldn't be left in temperatures above 90 degrees for more than an hour. If the temperature is below 90 degrees, don't leave food out for more than two hours. Help out Foodbank

Coupons usually take money off your grocery bill. But this month, you can use coupons to add to your bill.

Through July, area grocery stores will have Check Out Hunger coupons displayed near the cash registers. For each coupon you use, $1 is added to your total. The dollar is then forwarded to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

Look for Check Out Hunger displays in Super Fresh, Farm Fresh, Be-Lo, Sam's Club and Price Club locations. Fat-free creamer

Carnation has created a fat-free Coffee-mate for folks like me who have a little coffee with their creamer.

French Vanilla, Irish Creme, Butter Rum and Hazelnut Coffe-mate liquid is sold in 16-ounce cartons in the dairy case. It costs $1.39. MEMO: MORE MORSELS/F1
