Once again the worst in our society have reared their ugly heads. The recent act of anti-Semitic vandalism on the menorah that marks the land on which Rabbi Israel Zoberman and his congregation will soon build their new synagogue is a stark reminder that all is not well in our nation.
This desecration is not just an attack on one congregation or one religious group; it is an attack on all people of faith and good will.
As director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, I call upon all my fellow Virginians to condemn and repudiate this vicious manifestation of hatred. If the perpetrators of this vandalism are caught, we can only hope that they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Meanwhile, we must redouble our efforts to guarantee that our American dream of an inclusive and mutually respectful society will be transformed into a daily practice in South Hampton Roads and all across this great nation.
