TRAFFIC TROUBLES

Oil and water on Interstates 264 and 564 made for a mix of headaches for commuters Wednesday morning.

At 7 a.m., the right lane of I-564 was closed because groundwater was seeping into a tunnel under an airstrip at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.

Officials said pumps usually keep the tunnel, which is below sea level, free of water. They said the generator that produces power for the pumps failed.

Crews fixed the generator and the lanes were opened shortly after noon.

At 8:20 a.m. both eastbound lanes of I-264 near the Broad Creek Bridge were closed after a 55-gallon oil drum fell off a truck owned by Metro Machine, police said.

Motorists headed east were encouraged to take alternate routes as hazardous materials teams from Virginia Beach cleaned up the oil.

By 10:10 a.m. the spill was cleared and the lanes opened.
