A security guard making his rounds found a newborn infant in the stairwell of Sentara Hampton General Hospital on Wednesday morning, police said.
The baby boy was examined by doctors and said to be about a day old. Doctors said the infant was carried to full term, but was not born in the hospital.
The boy weighs 7 1/2 pounds, has a full head of hair, a red birth mark on his left ring finger and two dark spots on his right wrist.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 727-6111.
