TIDES KEEP JINX OVER PAWSOX, 8-6

The Norfolk Tides have confounded the Pawtucket Red Sox all season. In fact, Pawtucket is 5-8 against Norfolk this season, but 47-26 against the rest of the International League.

The Tides continued to unravel the Pawsox Wednesday night, winning 8-6.

But for some, like manager Buddy Bailey, Pawtucket blew it, plain and simple.

``The way I look at it, we gave them all eight runs,'' Bailey said.

Actually, his team handed over five unearned runs, though Bailey felt the other three were gifts as well because they accompanied a handful of Pawtucket miscues.

Indeed, the Tides enjoyed a couple key mistake-filled rallies. Norfolk posted three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score, 4-4, taking advantage of the second throwing error of the game by third baseman Luis Ortiz. After Ortiz threw away a sure double-play ball, allowing one run to score, Rich Parker belted a two-run home run off Glenn Carter to tie the score.

The Tides scored their first run in the fourth inning when Ortiz tagged Doug Dascenzo in a rundown, then threw wildly back to second base trying to get Shawn Hare.

Hare, who started the action with a single, came all the way around to score.

After Pawtucket regained the lead, 5-4, on George Pedre's bases-empty home run off Kevin Morton in the sixth, the Tides tied it again in the seventh when centerfielder Jeff McNeely misplayed Aaron Ledesma's line drive into a triple.

The Tides then scored three runs in the top of the eighth on singles by Omar Garcia and Butch Huskey and three Pawtucket walks.

``That wasn't Triple-A baseball we played,'' Bailey said. ``I'm sure there are a lot of guys in the other clubhouse happy to take it, though.''

Morton wasn't one of them. He left after giving up five runs through six innings, so he did not get the win against his former team.

``It was one of those games,'' said the frustrated Morton, winless since May 18.

Jonathan Hurst earned the win with two innings of one-run relief. He escaped a potential Pawtucket rally in the eighth when former Tide Mike Twardoski was caught off first base after singling in the sixth Pawtucket run.

Mike Cook earned his 10th save, retiring the side in order in the ninth. ILLUSTRATION: BOX SCORE
