W. CLARENCE GRIFFIN

Walter Clarence Griffin, 87, a resident of Wakefield, died on Tuesday, July 12, 1994, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond.

Mr. Griffin was a native of Southampton County and was the son of the late James Walter and Alma Epps Griffin. He was the retired owner of the Midway Service Station and the Midway Cafe in Wakefield. Mr. Griffin was active throughout his life in many local organizations. He was a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church and the Wakefield Ruritan Club. He was a charter member of the board of directors for both the Wakefield Community Hunt Club and the Wakefield Sportsman's Club. He served as a member of the Wakefield Town Council from 1948 through 1966. He was violinist for Wakefield Baptist Church for over 25 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fannie Laine Griffin; a son, Dr. C.W. Griffin; a daughter-in-law, Tina Ross Griffin; two grandsons, C. Wayne Griffin Jr. and Ross L. Griffin, all of Wakefield; four sisters, Mrs. Leclare G. Brittle of Wakefield, Mrs. Christine G. Vaden of Richmond, Mrs. Virginia G. Wright of Denver and Mrs. Betty G. Lineberry of Wakefield; three brothers, O.C. Griffin of Wakefield, W.B. Griffin of Bradenton, Fla., and W.W. Griffin of Dolphin; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Wakefield Baptist Church on Thursday, July 12, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Larry Grizzard. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Griffin, 131 Main St., Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, Waverly, Va. 23890. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is handling arrangements.
