WEEKLY BRIEFING

COAST GUARD DEATHS: A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crashed while trying to rescue a stranded boat early Tuesday, killing all four Guardsmen aboard. The HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crashed on land near Shelter Cove, northwest of San Francisco. Rescuers cut a trail through steep terrain to reach the crash site. The Coast Guard did not know what became of the stranded boat.

FLIGHT DECK CRASH: A Navy F-14 Tomcat crashed on the flight deck of the carrier Kitty Hawk during a night landing Monday in the Sea of Japan. The two crew members were in satisfactory condition, the Navy said. The pilot received second- to third-degree burns and the radar intercept officer was injured after his parachute snagged. The F-14 was destroyed. The cause was under investigation.

CONOLLY RESCUE: The Norfolk-based destroyer Conolly rescued 62 Egyptian crewmen after their ferry caught fire in the Red Sea on Tuesday. Shipping officials said the ferry Al-Loloa was carrying no passengers on its run from Suez, Egypt, to Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. The Norfolk-based destroyer Briscoe remained in the area to help with firefighting efforts. Both ships are helping enforce the embargo against Iraq.

INCHON ASSIGNMENTS: Sailors in the Inchon amphibious ready group, sent back to sea unexpectedly after a six-month deployment, can get information on their next assignments before they return to shore. The Navy is sending six detailers from the Bureau of Personnel to help the crews of the four ships in the group. They were in port less than two weeks when they were called back and sent to the Caribbean as part of the U.S. effort to restore democracy to Haiti.
