SOME GOOD CATCHES IN RAINY WEEK

Remember those summer doldrums we promised in Thursday's fishing forecast? They ruled the weekend for most fishermen along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.

While a few impressive catches were made, overall action was slow, especially for the offshore set, which reported only a few billfish and a scattering of small yellowfin, plus a few dolphin. Bluefin tuna played hit-and-mostly-miss.

And if the summer doldrums were not enough, the squally, rainy weather of the past week forced many fishermen to give up any angling plans they may have had.

Of course, exceptions are always around.

The most notable came from Wachapreague, on the Eastern Shore. John Byrom of Takoma Park, Md., caught and released a sailfish about 10 miles off Wachapreague Inlet. He was with skipper Sam Parker on the charter boat Scorpio, sailing from Wachapreague Marina.

``I was as surprised as anyone when I saw what the fish was,'' Parker said. ``I've been fishing off this beach for a good many years and I've never heard of a sailfish being that close. Next thing, you'll be hearing that someone caught one surf fishing.''

Robert Staples, on the Southern Breeze, sailing from Fisherman's Wharf Marina in Virginia Beach, provided another exception Sunday. Fishing at the Cigar, he released a small blue marlin and a white marlin, and boated a 36 1/2-pound dolphin.
